The role

The Director, Philanthropy’s primary purpose is to develop and implement a philanthropic program that will create a diverse, sustained revenue stream for the Foundation and thereby contribute to increased impact for mission-related activities.

We are looking for a results-driven individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and experience in developing relationships and business opportunities. The ability to coordinate projects with diverse stakeholders and often competing priorities is a must, as is the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Appreciation, and a general understanding, of medical research fundraising would be highly desirable.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Program Development and Implementation

  • Develop and implement a multi-year philanthropy strategy in line with the Foundation’s key objectives to drive new streams of revenue for the Foundation, including trust and foundations, major donors, bequests portfolios and gifts in wills
  • Develop and implement donor care programs, in collaboration with senior staff, external stakeholders and service providers
  • Research, identify, cultivate and steward new prospects and existing donors
  • Provide strategic advice on funding and sector trends and identify opportunities to ensure the organisation is well-positioned to meet its annual and long-term strategic goals
  • Research and recommend philanthropic and corporate partners aligned with our mission and strategic plan through targeted prospecting, grants search directories, and industry networking in Australia and overseas.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to coordinate and develop major gift opportunities in line with the organisation’s strategic plans
  • Manage a team of enthusiastic fundraising professionals to collectively drive revenue for the Foundation’s mission

Donor Engagement and Stewardship

  • Donor acquisition – identify and engage with prospects to grow the donor pipeline, with a goal to meet new prospects on a monthly basis
  • Represent the Foundation’s work to existing and prospective supporters who have different campaign or country interests, and convert this into financial support
  • Donor retention – regularly communicate and engage with existing donors to ensure the ongoing stability of the existing funding pipeline
  • Plan and execute a rolling program of strategic major donor meetings, events and other regular face to face and virtual engagement with donors and prospects
  • Manage existing relationships with high-net-worth individuals
  • Manage and deepen engagement with donors, partners and collaborative funders to enhance our donors’ experience and increase retention
  • Use and develop the Foundation’s CRM (Salesforce) for relationship management and reporting
  • Take a leading role in developing and pitching the case for support to various stakeholders, including individual donors, funders, and corporates. Ensure communication of impact and new initiatives to attract and communicate with donors.
  • Work to maximise opportunities from the corporate and philanthropic sectors by developing proposals, pitches & updates for corporates, foundations and major donors.
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to ensure appropriate collateral and/or support material is developed on time and within budget to communicate appropriately with donors.

Qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Training/ qualifications in philanthropy or fundraising practice

Desired Experience

  • 15+ years of experience in philanthropy
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic development of fundraising and philanthropy activities
  • Demonstrated record of securing philanthropic gifts and other financial support including sponsorships, partnerships and impact investments

Preferred Skills/Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of the fundraising and philanthropic environment in Australia
  • Strong analytical, research planning and project management skills
  • Proven ability to develop and monitor strategic fundraising plans including budgets and forecasts
  • Confident presenter and the ability to be passionate and inspiring when communicating about CBCF’s work
  • Motivated and confident in pursuing opportunities with prospective donors, and building on existing funder relationships.
  • Ability to articulate complex issues in a compelling and persuasive manner to confidently deliver a pitch or demonstrate impact.
  • Familiarity with the Australian legal and regulatory environment impacting on fundraising
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines proficiently
  • Ability to work independently and make autonomous decisions
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
