About Us

Desert Support Services Pty Ltd (DSS) works alongside Traditional Owners to maintain the health of their culture, Country and people. For more than 10 years, our collaborative approach has achieved Traditional Owner led outcomes throughout the Central Desert region of Western Australia and beyond.

About the Role

This is an exceptional opportunity to work with Traditional Owners to build on a highly successful and long-running land management program with strong partnerships. The Tjukurrpa Ranger project, funded by the WA Aboriginal Ranger Program (ARP), focuses on building the capacity of Martu to develop ranger career pathways and take on more leadership roles.

You will be supported to provide mentoring, leadership and coordination to a core group of Martu employees (the Tjukurrpa Rangers), and the Martu Tjukurrpa Ranger Coordinator. This team’s activities focus on cultural, visitor and environmental management on the iconic Canning Stock Route, in the Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area (IPA), located within the Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts. The role will:

  • Coordinate program design and delivery for the Birriliburu Tjukurrpa Aboriginal Ranger Program, including leading on-country field activities; and
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet the goals of Birriliburu Traditional Owners, as identified in the ARP and Birriliburu IPA Management Plans.

The role requires you to work with the Birriliburu team at the well-appointed Wiluna Ranger Base, and remotely in the field for extended periods of time during the field season (roughly March to November).

About You

This job is for you if you:

  • have a sense of adventure;
  • are a dynamic team player;
  • have excellent mentoring, facilitation and multi-tasking skills;
  • are confident working with Aboriginal people to achieve shared goals;
  • are comfortable conducting field work, driving and camping in remote desert areas;
  • show initiative and get results with limited supervision; and
  • have excellent practical, problem solving, organisational, and communication skills.

An attractive salary package with significant benefits including flexible work hours, 4 weeks annual leave, paid Christmas shutdown, relocation assistance, remote allowance (if relevant), TOIL system and salary sacrifice will be offered to the successful candidate.

For the right candidate, additional work within DSS programs could be negotiated to bring the workload up to a full-time role.
