About the Role:

The Finance Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing and managing the accounting and finance operations of Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC). Reporting to the Corporate Services Manager, the Finance Manager is responsible for ensuring the Corporation's financial health and stability through financial planning, financial reporting, effective budgeting and compliance. The Finance Manager will ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and integrity of financial data, support Corporation objectives, and provide financial guidance through the Corporate Services Manager and CEO to the Dambimangari Board.

The Finance Manager will partake in daily financial processing, including accounts payable and receivable, as well as ad-hoc members services and Corporation payments. The Finance Manager will manage the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all financial records, ensuring all records are reconciled and reviewed with absolute accuracy. The role will also prepare end of month profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash-flow reports, and provide monthly balance sheet reconciliations and transaction analyses.

About the Corporation: 

Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) provides a unique opportunity to work closely with Aboriginal people in one of the most remote, spectacular regions of the Kimberley. DAC is a small Aboriginal Corporation dedicated to the benefit of our members, Dambimangari Traditional Owners. DAC is the governing body for all Dambimangari business on behalf of our members, and in line with traditional Law and Culture. We employ more than 30 staff, the vast majority of whom are Traditional Owners. The Corporation’s key functions include:

  • Managing Native Title including engaging with mining, tourism and other access and development proposals
  • Members’ Services like health and education
  • Land and sea management (Indigenous Protected Area, Ranger Program & Jointly Managed Marine Park including fire, ferals, weeds and marine patrols)

What We Are Looking For:

You will be an experienced Finance Manager with strong financial management competency and problem-solving skills. Ideally, you will have a background as an Accountant (CPA; CA) and you will be confident to take responsibility of the Accounting & Finance function at the Corporation. You will be comfortable working in a cross-cultural setting, and you will be keen to further develop your knowledge of Indigenous culture and excited to live in and explore the remote Kimberley region.

Duties will include:

  • Provide advice on financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting through the Corporate Services Manager and CEO to the Dambimangari Board.
  • Lead the budget planning process and preparing the annual budget in consultation with the Corporate Services Manager and CEO for approval by the Board.
  • Provide support on financial estimates and reports for new projects or for new funding applications.
  • Ensure that processes and methods are in place to assist staff to develop and implement budgets in accordance with work plans.
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to the CEO and Board.
  • Daily financial processing and data entry (MYOB) including accounts payable and receivable, as well as ad-hoc Members Services and corporation payments.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all financial records, ensuring all records are reconciled and reviewed regularly and systematically.
  • Prepare the month end profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow reports, including monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Accurate processing of banking transactions and credit card transactions through the business’ online banking interface.
  • Develop, implement and maintain financial reporting procedures manual.
  • Ensure all internal and external reporting, tax and compliance milestones are met.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Qualification in Bookkeeping (essential).
  2. Registered BAS Agent (essential).
  3. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field (desirable)
  4. Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Accountant (CA) (desirable).
  5. Minimum 5 years of experience in a finance management or accounting role (essential).
  6. Experience working with or within Aboriginal communities, preferably in a remote context (desirable).
  7. Knowledge of financial principles and managing financial management frameworks, programs, and systems.
  8. Knowledge of financial management issues and challenges and the ability to manage change processes.
  9. Practical application of financial management in an Aboriginal Corporation or Not-for-Profit environment (desirable).
  10. Proficiency in financial software and systems such as Xero, MYOB, SAP, etc.
  11. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  12. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  13. Appreciation, sensitivity understanding and some knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander history, traditions, protocols and culture.
  14. Current C-Class Driver’s License.
  15. Possession of or ability to obtain a National Police Clearance and valid Working with Children’s Check.
