Over the last three decades, Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) has been a beacon of hope, tirelessly advocating for the vulnerable in the Northern Territory. Our commitment to justice is unwavering; we provide free, confidential support to empower individuals in our community. Through fair access to legal advice and fearless advocacy, we resolve injustices and confront disadvantages directly.

Our legal help and support teams, which consist of the General Legal Team, Tenancy Advice Service, and Seniors Rights and Advocacy Service, are located together, enabling integrated client support.

DCLS is the only generalist legal community centre in the NT, and we are actively pursuing opportunities to increase operations in areas of need.

About the Opportunity

DCLS has an exciting and rewarding Community Solicitor role.

Reporting to the Managing Solicitor your main responsibility will be to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals within the Northern Territory Community.

The GLS Community Solicitor position is based in the DCLS General Legal Services (GLS) team. GLS provides independent, impartial advice and advocacy assistance in general civil law matters in accordance with DCLS priorities. This includes social security, employment, credit and debt, NDIS, adult guardianship, and discrimination.

GLS aims to be actively involved in community legal education and a leading contributor and collaborator in advancing rights and justice for and with marginalise people in the NT.

The GLS Community Solicitor role contributes to GLS assisting clients, undertaking community legal education, and collaborating for reform.

About THE ROLE

  • Practising experience in direct client legal work
  • Hold, or eligible to hold a Current NT Legal Practising Certificate
  • Work within DCLS service delivery model to provide culturally appropriate legal assistance and advice to vulnerable people.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in communities.
  • Maintain accurate legal client files and timely data entry.
  • Identify and present meaningful Community Legal Education topics on community trips, developed in conjunction with the CLE Officer.
  • Participate in file review meetings.
  • Build a positive culture within the service which is aligned with DCLS values and Strategic Plan.
  • Undertake remote community travel from time to time, including overnight.
  • Undertake interstate travel from time to time.

  • Experience working in a community-based organisation
