Position Context

The Health Promotion Officer – Tackling Indigenous Smoking is a part of the Aboriginal Health Programs and is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the health promotion material for the Tackling of Indigenous Smoking program. The Service’s objective is to provide holistic, primary health care to the Aboriginal people.

In this exciting role as a Full Time Health Promotion Officer – TIS, you will report directly to the AHP Manager, and will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with the Metro-Melbourne Team to design implement a range of health promotion campaigns and activities in the south-east by:
    • Working with regional and local Aboriginal Community Organisations and relevant stakeholders to deliver:
      • TIS community events – supported by the Metro-Melbourne Team
      • School engagement with virtual reality components
      • Campaigns focusing on smoking during pregnancy.
      • Local Ambassadors program
    • Supporting referrals to Bunurong Aboriginal Health Service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Checks
    • Delivering place-based, culturally appropriate community education as identified by the team
    • Participating in regional team meetings, state-wide meetings and relevant planning meetings coordinated by the regional team leader
    • Supporting the Metro-Melbourne Team to deliver TIS community events across metro-Melbourne
    • Collecting data, generating reports and adopting an evidence-based approach by using collected data to inform service quality and improvement
    • Participating in training and professional development such as health promotion, tobacco cessation, data and evaluation, social media content creation and a range of capacity building opportunities to support the delivery of evidence based TIS program
    • Participating in ongoing professional development including training and supervision.

Qualifications

  • Qualification in Health Promotion and/or substantial experience in health promotion in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrates ability and/or experience in communicating effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and to handle cultural issues in a sensitive manner
  • Demonstrates ability and/or experience in health promotion, preferably in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the south-east
  • Demonstrates ability and/or experience in developing and managing a diverse range of stakeholders preferably in the health and Aboriginal services sectors (such as gathering places)
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the social determinants of health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of the local health and community services system; access, linkages and referral pathways to maternity and child health services; community and welfare service system
  • Demonstrates an understanding of evidence-based practice, evaluation and data collection
  • Proven record of well developed interpersonal, written and communication skills

You would also possess a current Driver Licence; Working with Children check and be willing to undertake a Police background check and provide proof of vaccination status.
