First Peoples Disability Network Australia is a national organisation of and for Australia’s First Peoples with disability, their families, and communities. Our purpose is to promote respect for human rights, secure social justice, and empower First Peoples with disability to participate in Australian society on an equal basis with others. We are the custodians of the narratives of First Peoples with disability, their families and communities and we recognise this important responsibility. We work for the recognition, respect, protection, and fulfilment of the human rights of First Peoples with disability and their families.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Training, Workforce and Engagement Officer, you are responsible for engaging with our First Nations communities to identify, develop and present Disability focused training needs for First Nations communities. The role of each Training, Workforce and Engagement Officer is to assist in the delivery and design of FPDNs comprehensive and coordinated national training project in collaboration with the Learning Design Officer and the Technical Support Learning Programs Officer. The Training, Workforce and Engagement Officers are located across the nation to increase the accessibility and contextualisation of training and engagement to suit local community needs and cultural protocols. The Training, Workforce and Engagement Officer will engage with local ACCO’s, ACCHO’s, local stakeholder organisations, as well as First Peoples living with a disability, their carers, families and support networks to increase their capacity and their understanding of disability rights and human rights.

We are seeking to fill two roles. Some local and interstate travel is required for these roles. Applications will be accepted from VIC city, regional or remote areas or the Kimberley WA.

ABOUT YOU

First Peoples Disability Network is seeking an engaging and passionate communicator and training facilitator, who is passionate about driving systemic changes in the disability sector in partnership with First Nations communities, First Nations peoples living with a disability, and key stakeholder organisations. First Peoples Disability Network is seeking a person who is able to work collaboratively, who has experience and a passion working in a dynamic and outcomes based organisation.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

• Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
• Cert IV Training & Assessment/Community Services/Social Work or similar, relevant working experience will also be considered.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain and foster relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and stakeholder organisations.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and present education and information sessions in a culturally safe setting.
• Strong communication skills and extensive public speaking experience.
• Experience in facilitating stakeholder engagement activities from the development and planning stages through to implementation stages.
• Demonstrated ability to engage with First Nations communities to develop a deep understanding of community needs for First Nations people with lived experiences of disability.
• Excellent organisational, research and problem-solving skills with great attention to detail.
• Ability to prioritise the competing demands of multiple projects within agreed timeframes.
• Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively across the organisation.
• Awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting First Nations Peoples living with a disability in contemporary Australia.
• Commitment to drive social change and inclusion for First Nations peoples and a demonstrated capacity to maintain confidentiality and respect cultural knowledge and protocols.
• Strong computer literacy skill.
• Current driver’s license as you will be required to travel to First Nations communities to complete community engagement activities, consultation with local communities and provide educational opportunities and training.
• Ability to travel interstate when required.

Desirable

• Lived experience of disability within a First Nations communities context.
