Djilpin is an Aboriginal-owned, not for profit organisation that exists to increase social and economic inclusion in the community and region. Our Cultural Enterprise programs aim to generate sustainable and culturally appropriate employment for Beswick Community members. We achieve this through the development of art, culture, and tourism products and services. Djilpin makes a significant contribution to work opportunities for community members by creating engaging, memorable experiences for visitors, showcasing cultural knowledge, and increasing sales of art and related products.

The Arts Centre Coordinator works on-site in Beswick and Katherine and is supported by an Executive Officer who manages funding, finance, governance and strategic development. The Coordinator reports to the EO and is required to be in community at least three nights/4 days per week, with a fifth day located at our warehouse in Katherine. Subsidised accommodation is provided in both Beswick and Katherine (107kms one way travel on a sealed road).

Key Responsibilities

  • Support, supervise and mentor Djilpin’s team of Artsworkers
  • Provide support to local artists to supply the Arts Centre
  • Coordinate and deliver sales of art and accommodation services
  • Build positive working relationships with the Beswick community, members and stakeholders

Specifically, the Coordinator position supports a team of local Artsworkers to deliver high quality Arts Centre services to artists and visitors, including:

  • Arts development and sales
  • Gallery retail operations
  • Visitor accommodation
  • Museum management and tours

Duties

Provide support and supervision to a team of local artists and Artsworkers to:

  • Purchase, catalogue, display and sell high quality art
  • Develop online content to promote Djilpin and attract online sales
  • Uphold gallery opening hours
  • Provide guided tours of the Museum collection
  • Maintain clean and safe workspaces and visitor amenities
  • Monitor and prepare for accommodation bookings
  • Maintain the highest standards of room servicing
  • Promptly check in and check out guests
  • Maintain supplies of linen, consumables and cleaning products
  • Monitor, report on, and coordinate building maintenance
  • Maintain responsible use of company vehicle including repairs and maintenance
  • Work with EO and project teams in the delivery of specific programs.

Communication and Values

The Coordinator is supported by an Executive Officer and is required to communicate regularly on day to day operations, planning and delivery. The Coordinator communicates progress, risks, expectations and other operational matters to the Executive Officer and Djilpin Board of Directors. The Coordinator is required to:

Selection Criteria

  • Qualifications or experience working in the arts, culture or tourism industries
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote Indigenous cultural context
  • Organisational skills and experience in day to day operations of an arts centre/gallery or similar
  • Experience in managing or supervising teams and capacity to recognise and respond to training needs
  • Experience with database management systems such as SAM, website and social media platforms
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure, and to motivate with sensitivity.
