About the role

Under the guidance of the Nurse Unit Manager, the role of lived experience peer support worker is to provide support and information to clients and carers of Wellington House and 1 East (Box Hill Hospital) detox units. The lived experience peer support worker will be required to utilise their own lived experience of alcohol and other drug use and recovery, as well as their experience engaging with AOD and/or mental health services, to provide emotional support, focus wellbeing, and promote choice, self-determination and greater opportunities for consumers to be heard and their experiences validated.

About you

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Lived experience of substance use and/or mental distress who has accessed public AOD and/or mental health services.
  • Understanding of AOD/mental health peer support principles and ability to use peer support to provide hope and a belief in recovery.
  • Understanding and appreciation of the principles of recovery, including social connectedness, holistic care provision and peer based examples of wellness.
  • Willingness to undertake training including, but not limited to, Intentional Peer Support and SHARC peer worker training.
  • Understanding a strengths based model of recovery.
  • Demonstrated understanding and empathy of the broad impact of AOD and mental distress on consumers and carers/families.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team including ability to express own viewpoint and respect the views of others.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and leadership experience.
  • A strong commitment to high quality care.
  • The ability to work as part of a diverse team.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
