The Organisation

Energy Consumers Australia is the national voice for residential and small business energy consumers. We’re a small, independent organisation with a big impact.

The energy transition is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities for households and small businesses, and you will be working at the heart of it. You’ll be making a difference by understanding the impacts of energy policy choices on consumers to influence decision-makers and ensuring the best outcomes for everyone in Australia from the switch to net zero.

You will be joining an organisation that has unique access to all players in the energy sector, including federal and state ministers, energy regulators as well as other organisations advocating on behalf of consumers. As advocates, we are committed to bold ideas, expert analysis and flawless execution, and you should be too.

The Role

The Energy Analyst is a pivotal position in supporting our policy work and advocating for energy consumers. You will join a small team of energy analysts that work across a portfolio of projects, bringing the analytical muscle behind our advocacy. You will be responsible for scoping and delivering the analysis to meet several of our policy priorities. You will work closely with other colleagues and external stakeholders across a range of areas in line with Energy Consumers Australia’s strategic priorities.

Your day-to-day job will include scoping analysis tasks; identifying, collecting, and analysing data; and creating presentations and reports with insightful data visualisation and clear narratives. You will manage external vendors and work collaboratively with grant recipients to help build an evidence base on key energy policy issues. You will work with key external stakeholders to promote ECA’s position on complex and sensitive issues. You are able to demonstrate good judgement and are results focused. You have a history of energy analysis and project management experience and are an expert communicator for both internal and external audiences.

  • Project management skills and able to meet deadlines: Experience in project development and delivery is essential. An ability to prioritise tasks, communicate and collaborate well internally and externally, report progress, hit deadlines and achieve project milestones within scope, on time and on budget.
  • Completed a relevant undergraduate or post graduate degree in Economics, Engineering, Science, Human Sciences, Law or another relevant degree and have 3+ years’ experience.
  • Passionate about the evolution of the energy industry and/or public policy and intellectually curious. Previous energy industry experience is preferred but not essential.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Data analysis and research to build the evidence base for our advocacy across a range of priorities.
  • Data collection and validation, working with external parties to gather new data, e.g. the consumer sentiment survey, or to ingest publicly available datasets
  • Data management and governance to ensure ECA’s datasets are fit-for-purpose for analysis and publication
  • Data visualisation and storytelling that creates compelling narratives on the case for change across a range of energy policy issues
  • Communication and collaboration with internal and external audiences to share your analysis and respond to requests for information, including from government, regulators, and other advocates.
  • Provide advice and recommendations on research methodology to inform ECA’s consumer research and help assess grant applications.
