CONTEXT:
The ESA is a membership based Society and the peak body for ecologists within Australia. The ESA’s mission is to foster excellence in ecological science and practice. We create an inclusive community to support research and knowledge sharing to better understand ecological systems. One of our core values is knowledge sharing, and our Strategic Plan places a strong emphasis on effective communication with members and public outreach to improve understanding of ecology more broadly, and integrate ecological principles into environmental policy and society.
An effective Communications Strategy is essential to enable timely communication with our broad cohort of members, the capacity to reach a wider ecological network such as practitioners, media and policymakers, and engagement in meaningful public outreach.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
- Coordinate high quality member communications including content and distribution of the weekly e-News, monthly Feel Good Friday series, and other email communications as required
- Grow the profile of the ESA, and ecology in Australia. This includes liaising closely with our Social Media Officer as they work to develop the social media profile of the ESA
- Manage the ESA podcast Ecology Matters including planning, interviews, post-editing, release and promotions
- Manage the annual ESA Photo Competition including promotion, assisting the judging panel, online gallery and exhibition at the ESA conference
- Contribute to ESA media and communication activities including managing media activities around the annual conference, participating as an active member of the Communications Working Group, preparing media releases, and undertaking other media liaison as required
- Contribute to the development of our Strategic Plan 2025-2030. An effective Communications Strategy will enable meaningful communication with members, the capacity to reach and attract potential members, and a stronger profile and appreciation of ecology amongst the wider community
- Maintain up-to-date and engaging content on the ESA website
- Work collaboratively on strategic communications across the Society to support the Board, working groups and members with communication activities
- Monitor and evaluate communication activities, and provide regular reports to the Board
- Maintain engaging, accurate, and professional communications in accordance with ESA’s objectives and policies
ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA
- Experience delivering a coordinated communication strategy through multiple channels (e.g. website; e-Newsletters; and social media)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to write engaging and effective messages
- Experience in proactive and reactive media liaison and developing media networks
- Proven ability to liaise and collaborate effectively, professionally, and respectfully with diverse stakeholder groups (e.g. Industry, government, Indigenous groups, media, and practitioners)
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, using sound judgement and problem-solving skills to juggle competing priorities
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Demonstrated experience using the MS Office suite, GSuite, CMS, direct email marketing tools, CRM software packages, audio editing software (e.g. Audacity, Adobe Audition), social media platforms including scheduling software, and photo editing tools
- A passion for the work and mission of the ESA, and commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusiveness, and equal opportunity
DESIRABLE SELECTION CRITERIA
- Experience with the not-for-profit sector
- Experience in the environmental science and/or science communication sector
- Multimedia or equivalent qualifications

REMUNERATION
This role:
- Is a paid part-time position, approximately 20 hours/week;
- Is a work from home role
- $40 per hour based on experience
- Includes travel and accommodation to attend the annual ESA Board Planning Day and Annual Conference.
OTHER
- This role works closely with the ESA Board, Executive Officer, Social Media Officer, and other staff to manage the Society’s communication and public outreach;
- Some travel may be required to attend meetings e.g. the annual ESA Board Planning Day, linked to the Annual Conference. Travel and accommodation costs in these circumstances will be covered by ESA.
