ABOUT US:

Edgar’s Mission is a not for profit sanctuary for rescued farmed animals that seeks to create a humane and just world for humans and non-humans. Set on 153 peaceable acres situated just outside of Lancefield, the sanctuary is nestled in the tranquillity of the Macedon Ranges.

Edgar’s Mission rescues, rehabilitates, rehomes or provides life-long sanctuary to farmed animals in need. At any one time we provide a safe haven to between 350 and 450 farmed animals. Through education, outreach, advocacy, community enrichment and sanctuary tours, we encourage people to expand their circle of compassion to include all animals.

POSITION PURPOSE:

This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our much loved residents. The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for developing and leading a volunteer program. From recruitment, through training and rostering, this role will manage, grow and coordinate Volunteers for both sanctuary and outreach programs.

The Volunteer Coordinator will provide individual support to volunteers so they feel engaged and valued and leave the sanctuary as advocates for Edgar’s Mission, farmed animals and kindness while working with our operations staff to ensure sanctuary needs are met on a daily basis.

Key Criteria:

Essential

  • Experience in volunteering locally and/or internationally

  • Personal commitment to the goals and values of Edgar’s Mission and the promotion of kindness.

  • Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to build strong relationships.

  • Excellent organisation, time management and team coordination abilities

  • Good record keeping skills.

  • Good planning and problem-solving ability.

  • Physical fitness and the willingness to perform manual and hands-on work in all weather conditions.

  • A flexible and proactive attitude with the ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities on a daily basis.

  • Ability to work alone and unsupervised.

  • Punctual, reliable and a team player.

  • A current driver’s licence.

  • A Police Check

  • A Working with Children’s Check

Desirable

  • Experience working at an animal sanctuary, shelter or advocacy organisation.

  • Understanding of health & safety requirements.

Statement of Responsibilities:

  • Active participation in the People Care team and engagement with the sanctuary wide team.

  • Demonstrated actions and behaviours in living the values of Edgar’s Mission.

  • Commitment to learning and understanding all policies and procedures on the sanctuary and proactively committing to the safety of everyone on site - humans and animals through the Be Sanctuary Safe program.

  • Active interest to learn more about our animal residents and the Edgar’s Mission way.

  • Source and recruit volunteers through various techniques (databases, e-mail, social media etc.)

  • Ensure an engaging volunteer journey is developed to strengthen the connection with our community,

  • Develop and produce informative promotional material suitable for attracting community and corporate volunteers and ensuring its compliance with business guidelines.

  • Schedule and run volunteer information sessions, orientation meetings and formal inductions

  • Schedule and train volunteers on tasks required of them meeting our policies, health and safety regulations and Edgar’s Mission requirements,

  • Develop and maintain policy and procedures for volunteer management including recruiting, marketing, training and related activities

  • Maintain database of volunteers, their attendance and associated information,

  • Provide a timely response to all enquiries and queries relating to volunteering at Edgar’s Mission,

  • Produce schedules and workflows for volunteers both onsite and at outreach events.

  • Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and well-placed

  • Disseminate information on relevant changes at the Sanctuary and on upcoming events,

  • Prepare media communications relevant to this role if required

  • Keep detailed records of any OH&S incidents and observe relevant OH&S legislation

  • Ensure the purposes of the organisation and its actions are clearly communicated to volunteers,

Other responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a safe environment for animals, staff, volunteers and visitors by following biosecurity, emergency and safety procedures.

  • Occasional travel may be required for animal transport and general errands.

  • Other duties as required.
