The Organisation

Our Client First Languages Australia is the national peak body working to ensure the strength of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

First Languages Australia connects language communities, often isolated by vast distances, to share their knowledge, experiences, resources, and skills.

The Role

The Program Officer will support the delivery of the First Nations Language Education Initiative in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Education and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities nationally. This role will involve working with interested Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to plan and document language teaching and learning activities, prepare grant applications, link teacher trainees with relevant skill development opportunities, and negotiate community-led school partnerships.

The First Nations Language Education Initiative is a partnership between First languages Australia the Australian Government Department of Education and participating communities and their local schools and training providers.

Duties:

  • Work to implement the First Nations Languages Education Program.
  • Triage and respond to Expressions of Interest
  • Keep detailed conversation notes
  • Coordinate & manage discussions with interested communities
  • Work with language teams to develop project plans aligned to the First Nations Language Education Program requirements
  • Develop and distribute templates to support language teaching and learning and project evaluation
  • Connect stakeholders with the relevant training organisations and coordinate training for participating communities as required.
  • Participate in and help deliver online learning activities
  • Work with participating communities to troubleshoot any issues arising.
  • Report regularly on the project to FLA Senior Policy Advisors, CEO and Management Committee.
  • Maintain regular communication with relevant stakeholders.
  • Support evaluation and data collection with regard to the progress, milestones and outcomes of each project.
  • Prepare brief promotional information on the project and the program for regular sharing on social media and FLA communications.

This position is an Identified Position - To perform this role, the person must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.

About you

You will:

  • Have excellent yarning and community skills
  • Be great at working with people via phone and email
  • Have grant writing and project planning, evaluation and reporting skills
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language education practice or knowledge.
  • Experience working for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
  • A demonstrated capacity to be flexible and problem-solve in an Indigenous community environment.
  • Proven ability to engage internal and external stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, educators and young people.
  • Have experience in facilitating online meetings and professional development.
  • Work well in a remote team environment, with good time management skills and an ability to be self-directed in undertaking daily tasks.

Experience working with the Department of Education will be viewed favourably.
