Elder Rights Advocacy (ERA) is a state-wide, Victorian non-profit organisation established in 1990. We are a member of the national Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) delivering the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP).

Our advocacy, information, community education and elder abuse prevention covers all forms of care for older people, with a focus on Commonwealth-funded home care and residential care. We also deliver the Aged Care Navigator trial and the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS).

About the role

The Advocate, Aged Care Navigator assists older people, their families and representatives link with and access aged care supports. They provide additional support to help the older person understand the process, explore available options and engage with the aged care system, including connecting with My Aged Care.

The Navigator particularly works with people who:

  • Live in rural or remote areas;
  • Have a diverse cultural background;
  • Identify as gender diverse;
  • Have limited access to the internet or other technologies;
  • Are vulnerable, isolated, homeless, disadvantaged or impaired;
  • Have dementia or mental health problems;
  • Are unlikely to seek aged care support without assistance from others.

This position reports to Team Leader—Aged Care Navigator. It is based in Geelong, covering the Barwon South Western and Western Metropolitan regions of Victoria. Currently all staff are working remotely due to COVID-19.

This role is FTE 0.8 (60.8 hrs per f/n)

Salary is based on SCHADS Level 5 with salary packaging also available.

About you

You have a genuine interest in and commitment to working with older people in our community, especially those with diverse needs. You have well-grounded knowledge of the aged care system, including detailed knowledge of home care services and the experience of gaining access to services through My Aged Care. You understand the difficulties and barriers some people experience in finding out about and accessing aged care services, and how these difficulties may be overcome. You are great at creating networks with community groups, service providers and other stakeholders. You have an understanding of how aged care information and advocacy can assist older people and their families. You are an excellent communicator and feel just as comfortable presenting a webinar as you do standing in front of a large audience. You are a strategic thinker and unafraid to try new things.
