Reporting to the Senior Advisor - Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Social & Emotional Wellbeing, the Advisor - Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Social & Emotional Wellbeing supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing knowledge through National workforce strategies and organisational change to sustain practice development and place based activities to integrate collective actions to support the mental health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants, children and families. The development of high-level relationships with organisations engaged in the delivery of services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (0 to 12 years) and their parents/carers and kin is a key feature.

Key duties include but are not limited to:

  • Promote Emerging Minds, the National Workforce Centre for Child Mental Health to organisations engaged in the delivery of support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (0 -12) and their parents/caregivers (adult and child focused services).
  • Engage organisations working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants and children, who would benefit from prevention and early intervention, including those who have experienced trauma, to support the identification of workforce support needs.
  • Engage organisations working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents/carers and or parents/kin of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants and children to promote Emerging Minds workforce development products and resources to support social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Disseminate and provide implementation guidance on workforce education strategies for service organisations to provide integrated mental health support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families.
  • Provide workforce support and guidance for services to integrate child, parent, and family mental health strategies into routine service delivery to support the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants, children and families.
  • Disseminate and provide workforce support on the use of the Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Families and Children Toolkit.
  • Provide guidance to service networks to implement tools, policies, and systems to improve mental health support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander infants, children and their families.
  • Support targeted engagement with Vocational and Tertiary education providers to integrate social and emotional wellbeing content into professional training programs.
  • Strategic development of cross portfolio place-based strategies and workshops to network across community organisations to improve shared understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
  • Deliver workshops and education to service workforce development and practice leads to build and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Provide face to face training where it links with scaffolded learning and quality improvement strategies across organisations who support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families.

To be successful in this position you will have:

  • An appropriate degree level qualification in health, behavioural or social sciences, and/or high level demonstrated knowledge of the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing to support the mental health outcomes of infants, children, and their families.
  • Experience in the development, delivery, and evaluation of workforce development strategies regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
  • High level experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement strategies.
  • Significant experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child, parent and family social and emotional wellbeing service delivery using empirically supported interventions.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging and consulting with individuals, children, parents, and professionals.
  • High level interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, organisations, and professionals.
  • High level demonstrated skills in the application of adult learning principles for face-to-face training, implementation, and continuous improvement strategies.
  • Specialised knowledge in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing and mental illness prevention, mental health promotion and early intervention as it relates to Aboriginal children and families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of National and State policies and plans relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing mental health, child and family health and welfare.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intergenerational impact of colonisation and trauma, in particular, on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated experience in accomplishing the objectives of a complex project/s utilising high levels of initiative.

Special conditions:

  • This position may require intra/interstate travel which may necessitate overnight absences (subject to COVID-19 restrictions and Government health advice).
  • A current National Police Certificate and Working with Children Check are required.
  • It is a condition of employment that the employee is fully vaccinated (as determined by the employer) against COVID-19 to the satisfaction of the employer and provides the employer with evidence it considers satisfactory. These are both inherent requirements of the employee's position. Being fully vaccinated includes booster injections
  • This is a fixed term contract position (0.8 FTE) until 30 June 2023.
  • Interstate candidates will be considered.
  • This position is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Salary and Benefits

A salary of $100,866.00 per annum (adjusted to hours worked), salary packaging and entertainment packaging is available. Additional Employer Superannuation Contribution of 3%.
