• Term: Six months (possibility of extension), four days per week.
• Pay: Paid fortnightly at the rate of $41.52 per hour.

Background:

There is no debate, Australia needs swift and considered action on climate for us to have any chance of mitigating against, and adapting to, the growing impacts of climate change. 

Tasmania is at the forefront of this challenge but is a state divided. On one hand, Tasmania is a global leader in renewable energy generation. On the other hand, Tasmania has a government that has recently removed its climate change ministry. 

The current situation presents a brilliant opportunity for an effective campaigner to navigate this fractious landscape and deliver substantial outcomes for nature and Tasmanian communities.

The role:

Our new Energy & Climate Campaigner will design and implement impactful campaign activities to raise awareness on climate change whilst working with local communities, interest groups and the government to advocate for changes to Tasmania’s energy policies.

We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated individual who is comfortable working at pace to deliver the campaign’s objectives. You will need to be able to work well with others and have strong communication and time management skills. The basis of the campaign is already in place and we will support you as you drive it forward, expand it and make it your own.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Develop and deliver our Energy & Climate Campaign’s objectives with advice sought from our Executive Officer. 
• Work with campaigners from other Conservation Councils on a national project looking at decarbonising Australia’s energy sector and encouraging greater adoption of best practice policies for this transition.
• Build relationships with key stakeholders, respecting various arguments, in order to begin effectively resolving conflicts in the energy and climate space in Tasmania. 
• Design and deliver an Energy & Climate Conference with support from our EO.
• Undertake advocacy with key decision-makers and government (across varying spatial scales).
• Work with Environment Tasmania’s Communications Team, to develop content for social media, traditional media, website, supporter emails, letter writing and petitions, and other related campaign materials. 
• Support the development of funding applications and reports to funders in coordination with our Executive Officer and Board.

Skills and Experience:

• A strong understanding of climate science and/or the renewable energy industry. 
• Motivated by the opportunity to drive social and political change.
• Experience working with and successfully engaging different stakeholder groups.
• Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
• Experience working as part of a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, and a willingness to oversee multiple moving pieces.
• An understanding of federal and Tasmanian energy policy would be an asset. 
• Previous campaigning experience would be an asset.

Environment Tasmania’s staff can work remotely or from our offices in Hobart or Launceston. Hours can be flexible but face-to-face crossover time with our team each week is essential. Infrequent travel would be required.
