With its base in Broome, EK is dedicated to looking after the health of the land and waters of the region through advocacy, on-ground cultural and natural resource management (CNRM) and conservation economy initiatives.

Position Summary

This position manages Environs Kimberley’s Kimberley Nature Project (KNP) team, which focuses on natural resource management (terrestrial and freshwater), ecology, social science and community engagement. Much of KNP's work involves supporting Aboriginal ranger teams and Traditional Owners to design, fund and implement cultural-natural resource management projects as informed by Traditional Owner priorities and Traditional Owner-led strategic plans (Healthy Country and IPA Plans). Working in collaboration with the EK Operations Director and the KNP team the KNP Manager has the following responsibilities:

• Implement systems that enable effective staff and project management, and excellent occupational health and safety culture and practice.
• Build strong and lasting partnerships with Aboriginal Ranger groups, organisations and their communities to support caring for Country.
• Implementing NRM projects in the field when required
• Maintain financial sustainability of the KNP team through grant applications, tenders and other funding sources.
• Guide strategic direction of the KNP team in alignment with broader EK team and strategy.
• Build and maintain relationships with partners and collaborators including establishing and managing/over-seeing MOUs and contracts.
• Ensure strong project outcomes are achieved and communicated back to communities, the EK membership, and government and within scientific literature.
• Work cooperatively with the senior management team to ensure there is professional organisational information flow to and from the KNP team.
• Maintain a healthy, happy and consultative team culture where staff feel that they are supported, included, and valued.
• Represent and advocate for the current and future needs of the KNP team

Supervises: Program Coordinators, Project Officers, Trainees (5-7 PAX)

Key Selection Criteria

Please ensure that your application directly addresses the selection criteria.

1. Degree in Environmental Science with related field experience in Australian ecosystems with a preference for Northern and Arid Australia and substantial knowledge of Australian natural resource management.
2. Considerable experience (minimum 3 years) in coordinating and implementing ecological/cultural NRM projects and/or programs, with a focus on strategic thinking, successful grant applications, and managing budgets and reporting requirements, including supporting staff to complete such tasks.
3. Considerable experience working in cross-cultural contexts and generating respectful, collaborative and long-term engagement with Aboriginal organisations and their communities. This includes evidence of knowledge of ethical practices in collaborative work and research with Aboriginal traditional owners and communities, including protection of ICIP rights.
4. Considerable experience in leading and managing teams, showing strong organisational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to promote staff development, empower staff to achieve agreed outcomes, deal with contentious issues, empathise with others, be inclusive and foster a safe and healthy workplace culture including through our OSH policies and procedures.
5. Experience managing and maintaining high level partnerships with working and funding partners, such as representative Aboriginal organisations, government agencies, and University-based academics and scientists, including experience negotiating MoU’s, service agreements, and other contracts and ensuring deadlines are met.
6. Evidence of high-level written, verbal and interpersonal skills that include the ability to collaborate, negotiate and liaise with a variety of audiences (e.g. scientists, local communities, Aboriginal partners, youth).

ADDITIONAL Desirable Criteria

• Higher research degree e.g. Masters or PhD in ecology, environmental science or related discipline
• Knowledge of, and demonstrated experience in, working with best practice two-way science principles and/or in inter-disciplinary projects (cross-cutting natural sciences, social sciences, anthropology etc.)
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 including Excel, Teams, SharePoint, Power automate
• Experience in spatial and ecological data analysis, data management and modelling - Experience using financial and project management systems (e.g. Xero)
• Experience implementing OSH policies and procedures
• Experience organising and carrying out remote and physically demanding fieldwork and leading teams in the field
• Experience in adaptive management frameworks and participatory processes such as Healthy Country Planning
