About First Nations Economics

First Nations Economics is an Aboriginal-led and Supply Nation registered organisation dedicated to achieving the social, cultural and economic aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We are trusted independent economic advisors to the public, private and community-controlled sectors.

As a registered charity, we redistribute 100% of our profits back into the economic development of First Nations communities, and work with our philanthropic and community partners to deliver outcomes for First Peoples. We do this through our Leah Armstrong Scholarship for women, our education programs, and our pro bono advisory for First Nations Community-Controlled organisations.

FNE’s advisory services include:

  • Strategy, co-design and facilitation
  • Business case and evidence development
  • Cost-benefit-analyses and more.

FNE is headquartered in Sydney, however we operate nationally. We don’t yet maintain physical offices however we engage both in-person and online with our clients and stakeholders across Australia.

Our Impact

Since being established in April 2023, First Nations Economics has:

  • Awarded two scholarships under the Leah Armstrong Scholarship, a $120,000 scholarship program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women studying financial governance, economics or related areas at a tertiary level.
  • Partnered with more than ten Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community-Controlled organisations to build economic prosperity for First Nations communities.
  • Worked with more than ten industry and government partners on key projects driving real outcomes and substantial impact in First Nations communities in areas such as justice, community governance, land rights and native title, financial literacy, economic evaluation and more.

About the Team

First Nations Economics is a small but senior team led by Managing Director, Associate Professor Rick Macourt (Gumbaynggirr) and overseen by an Aboriginal-majority non-executive board. We currently work with a small team of professionals with expertise in economic and public policy and evaluation, strategy, First Nations engagement, communications and more.

Primary Purpose of the Role

The Manager, Partnerships and Public Relations is an autonomous and key leadership position in the organisation and reports directly to the Managing Director. As a dynamic, community-focused professional you will:

  • build and maintain relationships with key industry, philanthropic and government stakeholders, with the primary goal of increasing the number and size of our financial partnerships.
  • identify public relations opportunities, including by leveraging events, to ensure the work of FNE is conveyed to large audiences.
  • provide high-quality written and verbal advice to the Managing Director and leadership team to support FNE’s role in helping achieve the social, cultural and economic aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • provide FNE spokespersons with support to enable them to articulate FNE’s policy positions where required.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Qualifications in communications, public relations, business or public policy
  • High degree of cultural capability and experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to support the delivery of a number of complex priorities running concurrently
  • Strong stakeholder and community engagement skills
  • Strong leadership capacity and willingness to learn and engage proactively
  • Someone who is willing to travel domestically, primarily between state capitals and sometimes overnight
  • Someone willing to work periodically in the office at either Sydney or Byron Bay
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours when required, specifically where workload or deadlines require.

  • Between $90,000 and $110,000 salary package, including superannuation
