The role

Aeon Media is seeking a visionary and strategic Head of Marketing and Communications to lead and enhance our global marketing and communications efforts. This newly created role is pivotal in advancing Aeon Media’s brand presence, audience engagement, and revenue growth across our digital publications and events.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the role is part of Aeon Media’s expanding executive team and oversees a small team including a Digital Strategy Manager, a Media Manager, and a Communications Assistant.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing and communication strategies to drive audience growth for Aeon, Psyche, and the Sophia Club.
  • Align marketing initiatives with Aeon Media’s overall objectives and vision.
  • Contribute to Aeon Media’s fundraising strategy.
  • Oversee and manage the marketing and communications budget for cost-effective strategies and ROI maximisation.

Brand Management

  • Maintain and enhance Aeon Media’s brand identity with consistent messaging across all channels.
  • Position Aeon and Psyche as leading voices in their fields and promote the Sophia Club as a unique cultural offering.

Content and Campaign Management

  • Lead the creation and distribution of marketing content across digital platforms.
  • Plan and execute integrated marketing campaigns for new issues, special features, and events.

Audience Development and income generation

  • Use data-driven insights to identify and target key audience segments.
  • Drive growth in reader donations, ticket sales, and membership programs.

Public Relations and Communications

  • Develop media relations strategies to secure coverage and enhance Aeon Media’s public profile.
  • Oversee internal and external communications, including newsletters and press releases.

Event Promotion

  • Implement marketing plans to promote the Sophia Club’s events and lead the launch and promotion of Sophia Club Collingwood.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Build and lead a high-performing marketing and communications team, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will likely have worked in arts/culture, media, higher education or for-purpose organisations.

They will have exceptional leadership skills, and a proven track record in strategic marketing and communications.

Experience

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in a senior marketing and communications role, preferably within arts/culture, higher education, media, or for-purpose organisations.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing successful marketing and communication strategies.
  • Demonstrated record of achievement in areas such as revenue generation, rebranding, growing visitation/audiences/consumers.
  • Strengths in digital marketing and audience/market development.
  • Experience working in relevant fields internationally will be viewed favourably.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.

Aeon Media is preparing to open a permanent home for Sophia Club in Collingwood in 2026. The premises will be purpose-designed to house a dynamic cultural program of events and activities as well as our evolving company art collection.

Aeon Media is a not-for-profit, registered charity operated by Aeon Media Group Ltd. Aeon is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) organisation in Australia and, through its affiliate Aeon America Inc in the United States.

Aeon Media is well funded and financially secure. It is funded principally by the founders of Aeon Media, Paul and Brigid Hains. This is supplemented by income raised through reader donations, grants and partnerships, and syndications. Aeon Media has an active reader donor program which raises approximately AUD1 million annually.

Aeon Media’s head office is in Melbourne, with editorial offices in London and New York.
