About the opportunity

Reporting to the Team Manager - Banking and Finance, you will play a pivotal role in how we consider and resolve complaints across banking & finance products, specialising initially in disputed transaction complaints in the standard and complex stream.

Typically, in this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for the management and resolution of complaints between complaint parties (complainants and financial firms)
  • Identify key issues, request relevant information, and consider possible solutions that are fair in all the circumstances
  • Help parties obtain effective solutions for complaints by conducting negotiations and conciliations to reach fair and efficient outcomes
  • Where complaints cannot be resolved by negotiation or conciliation, you will investigate these complaints and provide your view on what is fair in all the circumstances having regard to relevant:
    • legal principles
    • applicable industry codes or guidance
    • good industry practice
    • previous decisions of AFCA or its predecessor schemes (which are not binding)
  • Assist decision makers prepare complaints for a final decision called a Determination
  • Provide detailed and accurate advice to stakeholders on AFCA policies, approaches, processes, and Rules
  • Identify and escalate possible systemic issues or serious misconduct.

About you

To be successful in this role you have:

  • A sound understanding of dispute resolution methods and processes within financial services
  • Relevant demonstrated education and experience in a banking, finance or legal environment
  • The ability to translate complex legal and financial concepts in plain English, both verbal and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills with a focus on a high level of customer service.
