Glebe Youth Service (GYS) is a not-for-profit charity committed to supporting young people reach their potential, achieve their goals, and contribute positively to their community. We have been proudly providing youth services in Glebe for 30 years.

The role

The Youth and Community Worker works in partnership with the community, our stakeholders and the GYS team to delivery programs and services designed to engage and support young people, their families and the community.

This role reports to the Head of Programs – Youth and Community and will be responsible for the following:

  • Deliver programs and services that are aligned with GYS’s purpose and funding.
  • Collect stories, data and statistics as required for the purpose of continuous improvement through evaluation and reporting.
  • Support complementary youth and community development events and projects with partners and as required.
  • Support and ensure the overall safe operation and function of GYS.

GYS programs run on each afternoon of the week and on Friday and Saturday nights from 6.30 to 10 pm. Additional special events take place in the evenings and on weekends as necessary.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience undertaking community engagement, youth work or facilitating group work with young people and community members.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing advocacy and support to young people and community, particularly in relation to those experiencing marginalisation or vulnerability.
  • Experience in culturally diverse community settings, demonstrating strong cultural awareness to enable the development relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and community members of other cultural backgrounds, and a demonstrable ability to attain the trust and confidence from young people, their families and community.
  • Written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with all people to ensure effective relationships.
  • Demonstrated well-developed time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Relevant certification/qualifications or equivalent experience in youth work, community development or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality while engaging in person-centred work.

All GYS employees require current National Police and Working with Children Checks and COVID-19 Vaccination as a condition of employment.

Salary details: Social, Home Care, Disability and Community Services (SCHADS) Award: Grade: 2.1 + salary packaging
