Graham House is a not-for-profit Community Centre providing a range of services for the South Burnett community. We are passionate about nurturing the strengths of individuals and the community to empower them to meet their own needs. The South Burnett is a rural region 200-300 kms north-west of Brisbane. Our main building is in Murgon, one of the small towns in the region.
One of our funded programs is Older Wiser Stronger (OWS) which provides therapeutic individual and group services to men 18 years of age and over who have used domestic and family violence (DFV) in their intimate relationships. The OWS program sits within our Family Services Team along with Family Intervention, Family Support and Community Connect services.
The main focus of our OWS program is a group behaviour change program using the Ken McMaster model, Disrupting Family Violence. Men’s Behaviour Change programs in Queensland are funded by the Department of Justice and Attorney General. It is a requirement of the funding that two facilitators conduct the program and that one facilitator be male and the other female.
The purpose of the male facilitator position is to increase safety for victims of DFV by enabling male perpetrators to change their abusive attitudes and behaviours. Comprehensive intake, risk assessment, group facilitation and individual counselling for men are the core functions of this role.
Our OWS counsellor must also be able to liaise and work collaboratively with other service providers, prepare accurate and timely reports for the funding body, Government Departments and the Board, provide information and support to men regarding court processes and Domestic Violence Orders and work collaboratively with the OWS team.
Most of our Men’s Behaviour Change groups are held in the evenings to allow men who are working to attend. Capacity to work variable hours is essential.
