Electorate Officer - Office of Jenny Leong MP - Newtown Electorate Office

The Greens NSW

Greens Member for Newtown, Jenny Leong MP, is recruiting for an Electorate Officer to join her and the Newtown team to contribute to their work representing and serving the community.

We are looking for a passionate and organised person who enjoys working with and assisting people, has good political judgement and a broad range of skills to join our Newtown Electorate Office.

About Us

Our small, high intensity team is passionate, dedicated, and experienced. We are committed to building strong communities, serving the good people of the Newtown electorate as well as working collectively towards significant social and environmental change.

Sometimes we are helping people one-on-one to resolve a specific issue with public housing maintenance, at other times we are organising and participating in community actions with tens of thousands of people. We work across local matters, statewide portfolios and global issues - we are committed to collective action and community empowerment.

Our office has statewide responsibility for the Greens NSW Housing, Human Rights, Industrial Relations and Women's portfolios - as well as working locally with our community on key state issues and issues those in our local area feel strongly about.

In addition to Jenny, there are two experienced senior staff in the office - a Research Officer and the Senior Electorate Officer - as well as two Electorate Officers.

About the role

As one of two Electorate Officers in the Newtown team, you will be responsible for performing a range of administrative, constituent support, and community organising and outreach functions.

This will include a range of work, including acting as the initial point of contact for constituent enquiries by phone and walk-ins, handling incoming correspondence and email communications, assisting with scheduling and events, maintaining databases and websites, and assisting with digital communications. In addition to this, the Electorate Officers provide administrative support to Jenny, and keep connected with community through attending local meetings and events.

While this role is one that requires specific skills and experience - as well as a passion for social, economic and environmental justice - you don’t need to be someone who has already worked in politics or has a political pedigree to apply. We are actively encouraging First Nations people, people of colour, and those who are from a culturally diverse backgrounds who are interested in this position to put an application in, even if you don’t think you meet every part of the selection criteria. We are committed to addressing the lack of diversity in politics.

The current vacancy is for a full-time, ongoing position. As a requirement of the NSW Parliament, this is employed initially for up to 6 months and then subject to satisfactory performance, the role will convert to an ongoing employment contract with the support of the Member of Parliament.

While this is a full-time position, people interested in part-time / job share arrangements are also encouraged to apply.

This recruitment will also be used to establish an eligibility list for future Electorate Officer roles, as well as short-term relief and casual project work in our electorate office.

Total remuneration package $99,717 pa including salary ($78,034 – $88,756 pa), including all incidence allowance ($7,340 pa), plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.

Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience.
