Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation provides child and young person centred services with wrap-around supports for the family to address the individual needs of each client in a holistic approach to their success.

We are the only First Nations focused youth organisation in the ACT Region and the only Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) to deliver this holistic case management approach.

Our commitment is to protect, nurture and support children, youth and their families as they grow – from birth, through childhood, adolescence and into adulthood.

The Gugan team work with the community, and are also from the community. There is a strong sense of trust and friendship within the team and we are looking the right person to help build ourselves and our community.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Gugan Gulwan Family Support Service provides services and programs that assist and support Aboriginal people to protect and preserve their families. The position ensures that Aboriginal children and young people achieve their maximum potential by growing up in safe, secure, culturally sensitive, and supportive environment.

  • A demonstrated capacity to work effectively with the First Nations Community with the ACT and surrounds would be an advantage.

Position Description

  • Assess the family system and plan goals for any intervention, family counselling, mediation, and support. Determine appropriate action and carry out. Action will include appropriate referral or case plan development.
  • Implement the intervention through formal sessions with the young person and family, both individually and as a family group recognising and accepting the differing cultural values within the family unit.
  • Co-facilitate or facilitate educational classes such as behaviour management, independent living skills, parenting skills, household management, anger management and overall family support.
  • Deliver high level case management to vulnerable and at-risk young people and their families.
  • Where family reconciliation or restoration is not possible, arrange ongoing counselling and support for the young person to resolve personal and family issues.
  • Review all cases at regular intervals in conjunction with the Case Management Supervisor.
  • Ability to carry out necessary administration duties such as monthly reports, online reporting system, quarterly and annual statistics, correspondence, computer work,
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with, the case management systems (we use Redicase). Ability to maintain accuracy of online Redicase file load is essential.
  • Ensure the quality of client service through participating in accreditation and quality improvement processes.
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with other service providers, government and non-government agencies who are funded to service First Nations Families.
  • Other duties as directed by the Team Leader.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • A proven ability to communicate effectively with First Nations people and have a sound knowledge and understanding of our cultures.
  • Proven ability to work showing flexibility, energy, enthusiasm, initiative, commitment,
  • and ability to work under pressure.
  • Possess high level interpersonal skills and ability to relate and communicate well with young people and their family members and have a genuine regard for young people and their families.
  • Demonstrated experience working with children and their parents/carers and theoretical knowledge of the issues regarding child development, abuse and/or neglect; and experience working with people in crisis and/or parents in conflict
  • Proven ability to deliver high level case management including mediation, assessment, and referral.
  • Ability to carry out necessary administration duties such as monthly reports, online reporting system, quarterly and annual statistics, correspondence, computer work.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with the Case Management systems (we use Redicase) and proven commitment to accurate maintenance of online Redicase system.
  • Proven and competent written and administration skills including computer skills.
  • Ability to liaise with and knowledge of community resources and other service agencies and government departments relevant to the position.
  • Ability to work as a team member within the ethos and values of Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours and on call, as necessary.
  • A commitment to personal development.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a first Nations identified position – you must identify and be accepted as Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander.

  • A current ACT driver’s license is essential.
  • A Senior First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Actively participate in supervision, case reviews and team meetings.

Police Background Check

All employees will be required to consent to a criminal background check pursuant to the Children and Young People Act 2008 (The Act)

Employment is conditional pending outcome of the police check.

Working with Vulnerable People Check (WWVP)

All employees are required to provide their WWVP registration to Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation, or to carry out a WWVP pursuant to the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 (ACT).

Quality and Risk

All Gugan Gulwan employees are required to acquaint themselves with the organisation’s policies and procedures manual and to always abide by them. It is expected that employees will: -

  • Carry out all responsibilities in relation to the organisation’s Quality Improvement and Risk Management processes

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Cert 4 in Youth Work
  • A tertiary qualification in Youth Work, Human Services, Social Work or similar
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role
