The Role: This is a 'hands-on' corporate operations role

The Gugan Gulwan Operations Manager is a key part of the Management Team and Leadership Circle. They are responsible for overseeing the all corporate operational issues for the organisation, including WHS and QIP compliance. This is a 'hands-on' corporate operations role and currently has no staff management responsibilities (note: there is external support from a: accountant, bookkeeper and, myob consultant. The Operations Manager is required to work with both internal team members and external suppliers to ensure the smooth and ongoing operational requirements are met, including on ICT issues. They lead day-to-day financial operations and assist with all financial management and controls, working in close collaboration with an external financial team and as overseen by the CEO. This position also oversees building maintenance and liaison with ACT Property Group.

Being Canberra-based would be a distinct advantage, but is not essential for the right person.

The Gugan Gulwan team is currently 100% Aboriginal and Torres Islander staff. While this is not an Identified Position, significant experience working in an ACCO and a deep understanding of how to work in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities is essential.

Selection Criteria

You must specifically address the below criteria for your application to be accepted

  1. A proven ability to communicate effectively with First Nations people, particularly in the Canberra region, and have a knowledge and understanding of their cultures.
  2. Demonstrated ability to provide empathetic leadership to staff and assist with development of systematic processes for the ease of workflow and resource management.
  3. Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to use a range of Microsoft Office products.
  4. Demonstrated capacity and experience to think creatively and resolve conflict with the vision of maintaining high level working relationships across the organisation, staff and clients.
  5. Knowledge of WHS, First Aid and Fire Warden regulations and demonstrated practical experience in administering these service requirements within an organisational context.
  6. Ability to manage complex tasks, training initiatives and completing deadlines.
  7. Ability to maintain accurate records of meetings, discussions, telephone conversations with external providers.
  8. Ensure the quality of client service through participating in accreditation and quality improvement processes.
  9. Other duties as directed by the Chief Executive Officer.

Essential

  • Experience with and deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander world views
  • A current ACT driver’s license is essential.
  • A Senior First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • 6-month probationary period and an Annual Performance Review and annual workplan.
  • Actively participate in supervision, case reviews and team meetings.
  • Senior First Aid Certificate

A current ACT Driver’s License Police Background Check

All employees will be required to consent to a criminal background check pursuant to the Children and Young People Act 2008 (The Act)

  • Employment is conditional pending outcome of the police check.

Working with Vulnerable People Check (WWVP)

All employees are required to provide their WWVP registration to Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation, or to carry out a WWVP pursuant to the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 (ACT).

Quality and Risk

All Gugan Gulwan employees are required to acquaint themselves with the organisations policy and procedure manual and to always abide by them. It is expected that employees will:

  • Be respectful of the organisation, colleagues, clients, and public.
  • Act in a safe and responsible manner always.
  • Assist with and support internal and external audit processes.
  • Carry out all responsibilities in relation to the organisation’s Quality Improvement and Risk Management
  • Utilise and implement screening tools and models of care.
  • Compliance and Work Health and Safety frameworks

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a First Nations NGO or similar.
  • Educational/Vocational Qualifications Post-Secondary Qualification in Business Administration, Accounting or Management, preferably at Certificate IV or above.
  • Willingness to obtain MYOB or other accounting training or skill development, as required.
