About the role
The CFO plays a key strategic and operational role in ensuring HI's financial sustainability and alignment with our values of kindness, curiosity, and boldness.
In this senior executive role, the CFO oversees the organisation's financial integrity, including procurement, grants, finance, and fundraising portfolios, while working closely with the CEO and Board of Directors. The CFO ensures HI operates efficiently and ethically, empowering impactful youth justice initiatives.
JOB TYPE: Volunteer position (5-8 hours per week)
LOCATION: Work from home (BYO device) and management meetings
SUPERVISOR/MANAGER: Chief Executive Officer
DIRECT REPORTS: Finance Officer, Grants Officer, Procurement Officer, Fundraising Officer, Marketing Manager
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Financial Leadership:
- Develop and manage HI’s financial strategy, supporting long-term sustainability and impact.
- Advise the Board and CEO on financial planning, risks, and opportunities.
- Oversee financial governance, ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations.
Portfolio Management:
- Lead the procurement, grants, and fundraising portfolios, ensuring alignment with funding requirements.
- Support grant acquisition and financial reporting to funders and stakeholders.
Operational Finance Management:
- Oversee payroll activities, accounts management, and budget development.
- Manage the preparation and presentation of financial reports to the Board.
- Collaborate with the Finance Officer to ensure timely reconciliations, BAS preparation, and expense tracking.
Collaboration and Leadership:
- Contribute to the organisation's strategic direction as part of the leadership team.
- Mentor and supervise the Finance Officer and other direct reports, fostering a positive and growth-oriented environment.
Reporting and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records for audits, funding agreements, and regulatory reporting.
- Deliver timely, transparent financial updates to the Board, CEO, and other stakeholders.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Qualifications:
- Qualifications or relevant experience in finance, accounting, or business management.
- A valid Working with Children Check and recent WA Police Clearance are required.
Experience:
- Proven experience in financial management, accounting, or similar roles (3+ years preferred).
- Understanding of grant management and sponsorship acquisition is an asset.
- Experience with Xero or other accounting software is favourable.
- Experience in youth justice or other community / non-profit sectors is desirable.
Skills:
- Strong strategic and operational financial planning capabilities.
- Exceptional communication and reporting skills.
- Proficient in financial software and Google Workspace.
- Attention to detail with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Cultural sensitivity and adaptability in a fast-moving start-up environment.
