LiverWELL are eager to harness lived experiences of viral hepatitis to support out mission to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

Did you know that our livers perform up to 500 vital functions to keep us healthy and yet more than six million Australians live with liver disease of whom over 100,000 are Victorian’s living with viral hepatitis?

This could be your chance to turn this situation around. LiverWELL, incorporating Hepatitis Victoria, champions the interests of people affected by or at risk of viral hepatitis and liver disease. We aspire to better liver health for all Australians, free from hepatitis and stigma. LiverWELL provides information, support, referral, education, and advocacy for people living with liver disease and training for those who work with them.

The National Hepatitis Information Line (funded by Hepatitis Australia) seeks to ensure those living with, or at risk of viral hepatitis are supported to access information, referrals and linked to screening, treatment, and care. LiverWELL, in partnership with Hepatitis Australia are seeking applications from persons of lived experience of viral hepatitis B or C to fill a newly created peer worker role.

In addition to providing direct consumer support through inbound phone inquiries from the National Hepatitis Information line, your role will have a very large outreach component. Depending on the nature of your lived experience, you will be located alongside community and clinical services to maximise engagement with community members living with or at risk of viral hepatitis.

Your role will also seek to engage our priority populations and communities through health promotion and awareness raising activities, while supporting LiverWELL to achieve our core goal of “community owned and led”. By elevating user experiences and consumer voices and ensuring we will mobilise the community to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Lived Experience of viral hepatitis B or C
  • Demonstrated experience of engaging priority population groups with cultural sensitivity
  • Experience in engaging health consumers from a holistic perspective to undertake needs assessment, and to develop rapport and build client driven plans
  • Demonstrated ability to shape responses to individuals based on a range of information they have noted, and ability to relate to and see issues from the perspective of people from diverse backgrounds
  • Looks beyond the obvious to understand the intersection between psychosocial needs and how these may impact engaging in individuals in care.
  • Strong reporting skills, with ability to develop and implement action plans
  • Personal and situational awareness to assess environmental and interpersonal risks and respond appropriately.
  • The ability to develop an in-depth understanding of the complexities of viral hepatitis and liver disease.
  • Ability to manage own time and work, and capacity to respond flexibly to manage multiple priorities.
  • Growth mindset with ability to identify improvements and solutions.

Desirable

  • Recent experience in providing peer navigation and support, will be highly regarded.
  • Experience of constructively addressing access, equity, participation, and stigma issues, especially in community and health services settings.
  • A driver’s licence current for the State of Victoria.

Education:

Required:

  • Relevant level and expertise and experience obtained through service and/or study to enable positive health consumer assessments, plans, and outcomes.

Desirable:

  • Relevant degree; Health Promotion, Public health, or allied health
