Job Description

Himilo is a community led, not for profit, community development organisation that to improve educational, employment, health and social cohesion outcomes for the Australian Somali Community in West Heidelberg and surrounding areas. The Himilo Youth Justice Project Coordinator will lead an innovative, youth diversion project that engages at risk youth and youth who have come into contact with the criminal justice system in a program of capacity building and restorative justice to reduce recidivism and support positive reengagement with employment education and community.

The Himilo Youth Justice Project Coordinator will manage partnerships with Victoria Police, local community and religious leadership, Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court and RMIT’s Centre for Innovative Justice to design, deliver and evaluate this two-year project. The Himilo Youth Justice Project Coordinator will also work directly with engaged participants and their families or support networks, to provide individual case management support that facilitate improved employment, education/training, health, leadership, health and mental health outcomes.

Main duties/responsibilities:

  • Lead the project development, implementation and evaluation of the West Heidelberg Youth Justice Project
  • Coordinate the West Heidelberg Youth Justice Working Group and At-Risk Youth Panel
  • In partnership with RMIT University, develop an evaluation framework and tools and coordinate evaluation of the project
  • Provide case management support to participants and their families/support network engaged in the project
  • Develop and maintain relationships and referral pathways to partnering organisations, including community and public services/organisations
  • Ensure all project milestones are met, including producing regular project reports, workplan updates and participation in progress report meetings and community of practice activities
  • Develop and update project documentation
  • Adhere to all organisational policy and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation

Key selection criteria:

  • Understanding of issues facing young people from CALD backgrounds
  • Experience providing case management support to young people and their families/support network
  • Experience youth justice focused programs
  • Superior written and verbal cross-cultural communication skills
  • Strong relationship building skills and capacity to network across a broad range of stakeholders
  • Capacity to fulfil reporting and administrative requirements associated with the position
  • Understanding and sympathy with the mission and values of Himilo
  • Valid Working with Children Check card/VIT registration and Criminal History Check

Qualifications and experience:

What you will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Social Work, Youth Work, Law or related field
  • Experience delivering youth justice projects and/or services
  • Experience in working with people from the Somali community and/or CALD backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, organisational skills and time management skills
  • National Criminal History Check and Working with Children Check
