The Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation (the KAC, ICN 8355) is a relatively new Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC), which is currently expanding its workforce to accommodate new and exciting roles to support the Kariyarra People in managing their native title rights and interests. About the Kariyarra People

The Kariyarra People mainly live in the towns of Port and South Hedland, as well as neighbouring towns and communities in the Pilbara and Kimberley region including Roebourne, Karratha and Broome in the north-west of Western Australia. Kariyarra country is bound by Ngarla country to the northeast, Nyamal to the east, Palyku to the southeast, Panyjima to the south and Ngarluma to the west.

The KAC is the PBC which holds native title in trust for the Kariyarra People, who are the native title holders of the land and waters covering approximately 17,354 sq km of Australia.

The Kariyarra Determination Area is home to places of special significance to the Kariyarra People, including ceremonial and mythological sites, petroglyphs, archaeological and historic sites of significance as well as other topographic features including permanent pools, major river and estuarine systems such as the Yule and Turner Rivers and natural resources. 

The Role

The Management Accountant assists the CFO in accounting processes to ensure timely and accurate completion of internal and external reporting as well as the completion of daily responsibilities. 

This position will manage accounting activities, including bank, credit card and balance sheet reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll. This role is supported by a Finance Officer and Trainee Finance Officer.

This is a hands-on role and the successful applicant must be prepared to assist with transactional processing if required.

Undertake general administrative tasks for the Corporation as directed by the CFO.

Key responsibilities and duties:

Management Accounting

  • Ensure proponents are charged for work done by KAC and maintain records of acquittals for proponent surveys, monitoring and negotiations.
  • General ledger maintenance, ensuring transactions are correctly accounted for and income & expenses are captured correctly.
  • Liaise with Department Heads to ensure all relevant data is captured and recorded appropriately.
  • Maintain fixed asset register, oversee social housing asset database, motor vehicle & comms equipment registers and other critical documents.
  • Assist the CFO and organisational budget owners in the preparation of the annual operational, capital expenditure & revenue budgets consistent with long term business strategies.
  • Maintain the annual budget model used to support the Corporation and use as a basis for formulating monthly profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow reports.
  • Maintain and operate Forecasting and Reporting Software ensuring the Chart of Accounts and Cost Centre Hierarchy allows for adequate budget ownership and expenditure controls.
  • Implement improvement projects that assist in automating reporting processes.
  • Provide backup to the CFO for the provision of monthly financial accounting tasks. 
  • Assist managers in the business with the provision of costing information to enable them to manage their Department budgets and support development of business cases.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Experience processing and reconciliation of business transactions including BAS, IAS, FBT, debtors, creditors, payroll and superannuation, and credit card process and approvals;
  • Assist in month end and support year end process including balance sheet reconciliations;
  • Assist in the annual audit and preparation of statutory reporting;
  • Reviewing and lodging payroll from source data with strict deadlines;
  • Consistent application of external determinations and awards and internal procedures to ensure the correct payment of salary, fees, allowances and leave entitlements;
  • Checking year-end payroll for completeness and accuracy and lodging income statements;
  • Checking correct coding and GST treatment of sales and purchase invoices.

Other duties include:

  • Managing records and receipts.
  • Reconciling daily, monthly, and yearly transactions.
  • Oversight of processing invoices.
  • Establish accounts with providers of goods and services.
  • Developing an in-depth knowledge of organisational products and processes.
  • Providing customer service to members and service providers.
  • Resolve financial disputes raised by members or suppliers.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • A tertiary degree in accounting and/or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an accounting role.
  • Ability to work in a busy environment and manage conflicting demands;
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
  • High level organisational skills and ability to consistently follow-through on tasks;
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively under pressure;
  • Work as a member of a team with a shared vision;
  • Experience in use of computer software such as Microsoft Office, Xero, internet, and email;
  • A current Western Australia Driver’s Licence;
  • High level interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with members, major partners, and stakeholders; and
  • Managing accounting systems and processes.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with Aboriginal organisations and people.

Qualifications and experience required/to be maintained:

  • Working with children check
  • Provide a National Police check

Location and conditions

The role will be based in South Hedland. A generous salary package including housing allowances and benefits will be negotiated for the right person.
