Position Overview

Homelessness NSW is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Policy, Advocacy and Research to lead our strategic policy and research agenda. This role is critical in advancing a systems change approach to ending homelessness through the leadership and advocacy. The Director will develop robust, evidence-based policy positions and responses to influence change, facilitate access to data and evidence for the sector, and build the capacity of people, organisations and allies in their efforts to end homelessness.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the policy development, advocacy and research agenda to support strategic goals and projects
  • Develop, manage, and monitor policy, advocacy and research projects in line with organisational strategy and external trends
  • Contribute to the development of Homelessness NSW strategic and operational plans as a member of the Strategic Leadership Team
  • Provide expert policy advice to internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant standards, laws and policy developments impacting homelessness
  • Build and maintain a central hub of data and evidence to support the organisation and its partners
  • Enhance capacity and capability within Homelessness NSW and among members and allies to leverage data and evidence for change.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders, including government departments, non-government organisations and people with lived experience
  • Partner with universities, research institutes and other organisations to advance policy and advocacy efforts
  • Prepare submissions, reports, presentations and data summaries for various audiences
  • Support the Homelessness NSW team in evaluation, evidence-based practice and advocacy
  • Represent Homelessness NSW in forums such as inquiries, conferences and advisory groups
  • Promote a safe and respectful workplace free from discrimination, bullying and harassment
  • Undertake other tasks and projects as required by Homelessness NSW

Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in policy and advocacy with a demonstrated ability to influence social change
  • Strong research skills, including identifying priorities, designing research, analysing complex information and collaborating with other researchers
  • Deep understanding of issues affecting First Nations people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, with a commitment to partnership with First Nations communities and organisations
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of synthesising complex concepts for diverse audiences
  • High personal agility, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and adapt to changing priorities
  • In-depth understanding of housing and homelessness policy settings and stakeholders
  • Proficiency in facilitating inclusive stakeholder engagement and consultation
  • Proven experience in grant and tender writing, securing funding through various sources

Your Qualification and experience will consist of:

  • Tertiary qualifications in social policy, law, public policy, social work, community development, or equivalent
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
  • National Police Check
