The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the Role
We are seeking a Project Officer, Ear and Hearing Health to join the team and play a key role in managing and delivering projects that have a significant impact on the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector in NSW. Specifically, the role focuses on leading AH&MRC's efforts to improve ear health among Aboriginal children through the Ear Health Coordination Program. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the Project Officer will facilitate access to training and skill development, develop health promotion initiatives, and enhance collaboration between ACCHOs and specialist ear health services.
This position requires a deep commitment to advancing the rights and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal communities, with a respectful, empathetic, and culturally aware approach. The role also includes travel across the state to local schools and Aboriginal Medical Services.
Key Responsibilities
Program Management:
- Lead and implement a Community of Practice with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) to promote collaboration, workforce development, and networking opportunities aimed at addressing key health challenges.
- Coordinate and provide secretariat support to relevant committees and working groups.
- Contribute to the development of program documentation, including status updates, briefs, reports, budgets, discussions, and achievements, ensuring stakeholders are well-informed and up to date.
Stakeholder Engagement & Team Collaboration:
- Build and sustain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including AH&MRC member services, to enhance engagement and support the implementation of key initiatives.
- Represent AH&MRC and its member services at workshops and relevant platforms.
- Engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure their needs and perspectives are considered in policy and program development.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, providing guidance and support to colleagues as needed.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment that honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and values.
Policy Development & Advice:
- Develop preliminary policy recommendations on complex and high-profile issues affecting the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector.
- Conduct research and engage with communities to influence policies and programs impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Prepare timely policy advice, detailed briefings, reports, correspondence, submissions, and other materials addressing complex health issues.
Essential Criteria
Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualifications in health, social sciences, a related clinical discipline (e.g., Aboriginal Health Practitioner, Registered Nurse, or Audiometrist), or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience in primary health care, public health, or policy within the context of Aboriginal health.
- Proven commitment and capacity to working with Aboriginal communities and a strong understanding of Aboriginal cultures, health issues, and community dynamics.
- Ability to obtain a National Police Check and hold a current Working with Children Check.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Strong project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and risk management.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with Aboriginal communities and diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of the issues impacting Aboriginal people related to health and other social determinants.
- Demonstrated experience in developing, delivering, and evaluating health programs and initiatives.
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information professionally.
- Proficiency in using project management software and tools.
