The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Stakeholder Engagement Manager to join our Research team in the development of a precision medicine initiative for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in NSW. Working closely with the Director of Intelligence, you will be a key connector between Aboriginal families, communities, health service providers, and research teams, fostering meaningful partnerships and building essential networks.

The position will work closely with leadership of the Australian Alliance for Indigenous Genomics (ALIGN https://indigenousgenomics.com.au), as well as the ALIGN NSW Node members and their Indigenous Governance Committee.

The core focus of the role is to guide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, health services, key stakeholders, and the different research teams to develop shared understandings of genomics, and work in partnership to make informed decisions about precision medicine research and health priorities, protocols and practice.

This position commences in early January 2025, on an 3 year full time maximum term contract. The role will primarily be based within our Pitt St head office, with frequent travel within and outside of NSW.

Key Responsibilities

Community and Stakeholder Management:

Work closely with the Director of Intelligence and the Indigenous precision medicine team to:

  • Develop community-led engagement models that promote two-way knowledge exchange.
  • Assist in initiatives supporting Indigenous Data Sovereignty, ensuring appropriate use and protections of data informed by community needs.
  • Provide guidance to ensure Indigenous leadership and governance are prioritised in research and health initiatives.
  • Create culturally appropriate communication strategies for delivering genomic research updates to communities.
  • Facilitate meetings and discussions among communities, health services, and key stakeholders.

Integrity of the Research Program:

  • Ensure that community knowledge and data inform policy, planning, and decision-making processes.
  • Develop culturally appropriate community engagement plans to build respectful relationships with communities across NSW.
  • Collaborate with researchers and health services to establish best practices in genomics and precision health.
  • Contribute to the broader research program activities, including the development of an ethics application.

Project Management and Governance:

Work closely with the Director of Intelligence and the Australian Alliance for Indigenous Genomics (ALIGN) team to:

  • Implement project management principles throughout planning and delivery, managing resources and timelines effectively.
  • Prepare high-quality documentation, including reports, briefing notes, and project management materials.
  • Ensure compliance with governance mechanisms established by the funding body’s Governance Committee.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Must be of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent (pursuant to Section 50(d) of the Equal Employment Opportunities Act 1984).
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (e.g., business administration, project management, public health, community engagement/services) and relevant work experience in that field.
  • Ability to provide and maintain a clear Working With Children Check and Police Check.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Proven experience in administrative, project management, or business roles.
  • Proven experience overseeing and reviewing tasks and working with business leaders to drive success.
  • Understanding of Indigenous self-determination, community advancement, and capacity building.
  • Familiarity with genomics and precision medicine.
  • Strong cultural awareness and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that reside in NSW.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet competing deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with an organised, flexible, collaborative approach.
  • Current valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently within and outside the NSW state.
