About FPDN

First Peoples Disability Network Australia is a national organisation of and for Australia’s First Peoples with disability, their families and communities. Its purpose is to promote respect for human rights, secure social justice, and empower First Peoples with disability to participate in Australian society on an equal basis with others. It works for the recognition, respect, protection and fulfilment of the human rights of First Peoples with disability and their families.

FPDN’s individual rights-based advocacy programs have a strong connection to culture and community and exist to walk together with mob to listen, learn and to honour stories. Advocacy services are currently offered in NSW, regional Victoria, Adelaide and the Northern Territory.

About the role

This role heads up FPDN’s individual advocacy programs, with full responsibility for service delivery and leading a team of dedicated advocates who work directly with clients. Advocacy services are client-focused and aligned to the Disability Advocacy Standards, enabling clients to exercise their human rights.

In addition to leading and coaching your team, this role will see you designing advocacy models, managing day-to-day client service operations, undertaking promotional activities (including engaging with community), liaising with funders to manage and report on contracts, developing and implementing best practice processes for optimal client experience and outcomes, and compliance with legislative requirements. As part of the senior management team, you will also contribute more broadly to FPDN’s direction and development.

Ideally, you offer:

  • Demonstrated connections with First Nations communities and experience working with First Nations people
  • A strong understanding of human rights, disability rights, First Nations rights, and the intersectional discrimination facing First Nations people with disabilities
  • A solid understanding of the disability sector and knowledge of the current funding landscape
  • At least 3 years’ experience in leading and managing a team in a complex service setting, including leading an individual disability advocacy service
  • Applied knowledge of the principles of disability advocacy and empowerment from a service user perspective
  • Well-developed communication, stakeholder relationship, interpersonal and decision-making skills
  • Strong ICT and computer literacy
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications well regarded
