The Australian Human Rights Commission has an ongoing position available for a Communications Officer in the Strategic Communications Team.

This is an APS Level 6 position with a salary of $90,199 -102,002 pa plus 15.4% superannuation. Flexible/hybrid working arrangements will be considered.

Key responsibilities

Develop and implement communications plans

  • Work in collaboration with internal stakeholders, to assist in developing and implementing communication plans (internal and external) that meet the Commission’s strategic objectives; including communications support for key priorities such as the National Anti-Racism Strategy’s (NARS) anti-racism campaign.
  • Write high-quality, engaging and on-brand content for a variety of traditional, digital and social platforms and channels, tailored to a range of audiences, and ensure a consistent and appropriate style and tone of voice is applied across all communication outputs.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate plans for major public events such as the Australian Human Rights Awards, and the Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture.
  • Monitor and evaluate the results of communications plans and activities.

Content creation

  • Write high-quality, engaging and on-brand content for a variety of traditional, digital and social platforms and channels, tailored to a range of audiences, and ensure a consistent and appropriate style and tone of voice is applied across all communication outputs.
  • Content planning and creation for the Commission’s social media channels; evaluation of our metrics against our social media objectives.
  • Plan, create and send eDM campaigns as required; analyse the effectiveness of the campaigns; nurture and maintain the integrity of the eDM list and segments.
  • Update and maintain the Commission’s website and intranet, where required.
  • Assist in the creation of multimedia content where required, including assisting with video / audio and photography on occasion.

Provide advice and media support

  • Provide support to the Commissioners and the President in media engagement, including responding to media inquiries, writing media releases, and other media content and preparing interview briefs. This includes support for priority campaigns such as the NARS anti-racism campaign.
  • Respond to ad hoc communication support requests from internal stakeholders by providing advice and solutions that meet the overarching communication strategy of the Commission and address the needs of internal stakeholders.

Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in successful hands-on development and implementation of communication strategies and activities for a variety of projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing corporate social media channels to boost reach and engagement, and experience in the use of analytics to measure the effectiveness of social media activity.
  • Demonstrated experience in media engagement, including the ability to exercise sound judgement in the handling of incoming media enquiries in a complex operating environment.
  • Superior written communication skills, with a track record of writing across a variety of different media and audiences, and an ability to articulate complex information in an accessible and engaging way.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and/or experience in human rights is desirable’

Experience, qualifications and accreditations

  • Experience or familiarity with CMS systems eg Drupal.
  • Experience in social media management platforms eg. Loomly, Hootsuite
  • Experience in email marketing platforms eg. Mailchimp
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or other multimedia editing software.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline eg communications, journalism, marketing or equivalent professional experience.
