The Australian Human Rights Commission, located in the heart of Sydney CBD, is thrilled to announce an ongoing Communications Officer position within our Strategic Communications Team. We’re looking for a passionate individual to help elevate public discourse around human rights in Australia.

This full-time, ongoing position offers a competitive salary range of $90,199 up to $102,002 per annum plus 15.4% superannuation.

Our Strategic Communications Team is at the forefront of engaging audiences and raising awareness about critical human rights issues. We manage everything from media relations and social media to events and brand identity. Our diverse team brings expertise in journalism, public relations, graphic design, and more, all working together to inform and educate the public.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop Communication Plans: Collaborate with internal stakeholders to create and implement communication strategies that align with our strategic objectives.
  • Create Engaging Content: Write high-quality, engaging content for various platforms—traditional, digital, and social—tailored to different audiences while maintaining a consistent voice.
  • Plan Major Events: Take the lead on planning and executing significant public events, including the Human Rights Day Oration and Human Rights Awards.
  • Evaluate Impact: Monitor and assess the effectiveness of communications plans and activities to continuously improve our outreach.

Skills & Experience

  • Manage social media:Plan and create content for our social media channels, analyse metrics, and enhance engagement strategies.
  • Support Media Engagement: Assist the Commissioners and President with media inquiries, crafting press releases, and preparing interview briefs.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience: Proven track record in implementing successful communication strategies and managing corporate social media channels. Familiarity with CMS systems (e.g., Drupal), social media management tools (e.g., Loomly, Hootsuite), and email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp) is essential.
  • Strong Writing Skills: Excellent written communication skills with the ability to simplify complex information for diverse audiences.
  • Creative Mindset: Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar multimedia editing software is a plus.
  • Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, marketing, or related fields, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build positive relationships with team members, colleagues, and external stakeholders while effectively collaborating within the team.
