Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA®) is a not for profit organisation that independently accredits businesses that produce textiles, clothing or footwear in Australia, ensuring that their workers are being paid appropriately, receiving all the legal minimum entitlements and working in safe workplaces throughout the entire supply chain.

The ECA program maps a company’s Australian supply chain throughout the entire cut, make and trim process, including all value adding processes.

The accreditation and labelling system overseen by ECA assists businesses seeking to have an ethical and transparent local supply chain by independently ensuring they are compliant throughout their supply chain with the relevant Australian laws. Once compliant, accredited brands can display the ECA trademark on their Australian-made products, providing consumers and major purchasers with a way to identify and support ethical and locally made products.

The ECA program protects the workers who are an integral part of Australian industry by ensuring that they are working in safe conditions and receiving the appropriate pay and entitlements and strengthens Australian industry and supports local skills by promoting transparency and connecting brands with local makers.

ECA is a collaborative, joint union and business initiative and is governed by the Homeworker Code Committee which consists of representatives from the Union and employer organisations and business.

In addition to the core ECA staff, the Committee engages, through service level agreements, the Textile Clothing and Footwear Sector of the Manufacturing Division of the CFMEU (the Union) Union to:

• Provide a compliance role to ensure stakeholders in TCF supply-chains are abiding by the relevant ECA and Award obligations and
• To inform and assist home-based workers to realise their legal rights and entitlements.

Position purpose

This position is available due to maternity leave. The position will be required three days per week, for a period of 9 – 12 months.

The ECA Accreditation and Engagement Advisor provides information, advice and assistance to businesses wanting to become accredited with Ethical Clothing Australia.

The Accreditation and Engagement Advisor documents supply chains and liaises with Compliance Officers from the Textile Clothing and Footwear Sector of the Manufacturing Division of the CFMEU (the Union) to ensure ongoing compliance of participating companies.

The Accreditation and Engagement Advisor will build strong relationships with businesses and stakeholders across the Textile, Clothing and Footwear sector to increase awareness of Ethical Clothing Australia.

The successful candidate will need to manage the detailed work associated with the accreditation program.

This person will be part of a committed but small team nationally. Ultimately their work will aid people working in the TCF industry in Australia.

Organisational relationships

Reports to: The ECA National Manager

Liaises/works with:

• ECA’s Accreditation and Business Development Advisor
• ECA’s Administrative and Finance Officer
• ECA’s Marketing and Digital Coordinator
• The Compliance Officers from the Union
• The Outworker Education & Outreach Officers from the Union
• External liaisons: Businesses participating in the ECA accreditation process
• Industry stakeholders
• Civil Society and other organisations with similar objectives

Key responsibilities

1. You will develop and maintain strong connections with the local textile, clothing and footwear industry by engaging with local businesses that are accredited with ECA or seeking accreditation. You will provide expert advice on the accreditation program and its administration.

2. You will be proactive in engaging with local manufacturers, businesses and industry stakeholders; providing information about the accreditation program and its benefits.

3. You will continually work to grow the number of manufacturers accredited under the program. You enjoy a role that involves being out of the office, meeting new people and talking about the accreditation program and local manufacturing.

4. You will work closely with the Compliance Officers from the Union as part of the accreditation process to ensure all milestones are met and all relevant documentation and information on supply chains are maintained.

5. You gather and provide information on expertise and product capabilities of manufacturers that are accredited with ECA.

6. You will promote and protect the integrity of ECA’s trade mark by ensuring that it is being used in line with the organisation’s licence agreement and the associated rules.

7. You will assist in developing information and resources that can be utilised by accredited businesses to aid understanding of the relevant laws and legal obligations, and oversee the dissemination of this information.

8. You will provide support on information and education materials that are developed by ECA for workers in the industry, including homeworkers and outworkers.

9. You will provide telephone, email and face-to-face information and support to on the accreditation program. You will manage queries about local manufacturing and accredited businesses.

10. You will report progress or any concerns related to the accreditation program to the National Manager and the Homeworkers Code of Practice Committee.

11. From time to time, as requested by the National Manager you may represent ECA at industry and public events as part of the organisation’s overarching education and promotional work.

12. From time to time, as requested by the National Manager you will provide input and assistance with strategic or national projects.

Key Selection Criteria

Required:

1. You are driven and energetic, with highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to liaise with diverse stakeholders including businesses, unions, and NGO’s. You enjoy working with a range of people and business owners.

2. You have strong attention to detail; you are good at time management and you have the capacity to understand programmatic work and processes.

3. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will continually look for ways to improve communications associated with our accreditation work.

4. You share a commitment to the values and objectives of the accreditation program.

5. You have knowledge of the TCF industry and garment manufacturing industry in Australia, or similar and you understand the role of the Union in the industry.

6. You understand compliance and auditing systems, or similar databases.

7. You can work positively within the ECA program team and are always working towards the organisation’s overarching goals. You will actively participate in team meetings and workshops.

8. You are familiar with relevant office suite program (word and excel) and have experience is using internal information management databases or systems.

Desirable:

• Knowledge of Industrial Relations law.
• Knowledge of the textile, clothing or footwear industry.
• Experience working in cross-cultural contexts.
• Skills in languages other than English.
• A valid driver’s license.
