Principal Solicitor

Inner City Legal Centre

The ICLC is a dynamic community legal centre based in the heart of Kings Cross.

Specialising in casework, law reform and advocacy, we practice discrimination, human rights, criminal and employment law. We are proud of our diverse and supportive workplace culture and our deeply held commitment to achieve justice for our priority client groups.

The Principal Solicitor is responsible for oversight of the ICLC’s legal practice and supervising ICLC lawyers, students and volunteers in accordance with the Uniform Law and the CLC Risk Management Guide.

This position reports to the CEO and works closely with the Operations Manager to lead a small team of staff and a network of more than 100 volunteers.

We are looking for a solicitor who has demonstrated skills in legal practice and working with our priority client groups.

Prior experience in the Community Legal sector will be highly regarded; we will provide mentoring, training and support for a suitable candidate from our sector who is ready to step up to a Principal Solicitor position.

We would equally welcome applications from experienced solicitors who are committed to CLC values but do not have previous CLC experience.

The ideal candidate will have an appetite for accepting some risk when undertaking strategic litigation, we are renowned for pushing boundaries in order to improve legal outcomes for our clients; sex workers and trans and gender diverse people are particular priority groups for strategic litigation at this time.

The Principal Solicitor will also work closely with other Community Legal Centres, including Kingsford Legal Centre and Redfern Legal Centre, with whom we deliver the statewide Employment Rights Legal Service.

Now is a terrific time to join the only dedicated legal service for LGBTQIA+ and sex worker communities in NSW. Following increased client demand and identified legal need in our communities, planning is underway to expand our services beyond our traditional home in Sydney’s Inner and Eastern Suburbs. We are committed to providing a terrific work culture that emphasises diversity and supports staff wellbeing.

In addition to salary packaging options, the ICLC provides all staff with an additional 10 days of leave during the end of year shut down, flexible work arrangements and additional special leave.

Applicants who identify as First Nations, LGBTQIA+, Sex Workers, People with Disability, Culturally Diverse and people who have lived experience of homelessness or domestic violence will be prioritised in this recruitment.

Please do not hesitate to share relevant lived experience in your application for this position. All information will be received in confidence and treated with respect.
