The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to protect and assist people affected by conflict and violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war. An independent, impartial and neutral organisation, the ICRC is based in Switzerland. It employs over 17,000 people in 100 countries and is financed mainly by voluntary contributions from governments and national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The ICRC Delegation for the Pacific, represented by the ICRC’s Mission in Canberra, is seeking a Regional Cooperation Coordinator.

S/he will be responsible for staff in Suva, Fiji and in Papua New Guinea and for day-to-day engagement in the Pacific with the components of of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement, particularly National Societies. S/he will be responsible for maintaining and strengthening partnerships, coordination and collaboration between the ICRC and National Societies, including by supporting ICRC staff in the region covered by the Delegation. 

Main responsibilities

  • The post holder is the Delegation's main focal point for all issues related to the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement and actively promotes coordination, partnership and collaboration with National Societies and International Federation of the Red Cross / Red Crescent in the Pacific Region in line with relevant Movement frameworks and ICRC policy.
  • The Regional Cooperation Coordinator is responsible for building positive relationships and partnerships between the ICRC and the other Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement components.
  • You will work closely with the Head of Regional Delegation to develop the Movement cooperation vision and strategy in the Pacific, ensuring ICRC is positioned positively and viewed as having added value with the National Societies. 
  • The Regional Cooperation Coordinator provides regular analysis of Movement dynamics and trends. S/he sets and implements the Delegation’s cooperation objectives in line with the ICRC’s Movement policies and in consultation with the operating NS.

The successful applicant will have an understanding of the ICRC’s work and operations globally and understand and adhere to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Skills and qualifications 

  • University degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent command (written and spoken) of English; knowledge of a Pacific language is useful.
  • 3-5 years working experience with any components of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, or its equivalent (humanitarian field) is a must.
  • Strong diplomacy skills and experience.
  • Public communication/dissemination knowledge and experience is helpful, as this is the main programme area for ICRC support to the NSs in this region.
  • High flexibility and availability to extensively travel within The Pacific and overseas.

Conditions

The position of Regional Cooperation Coordinator is a full-time permanent position based in Canberra, Australia. 

The starting salary is AUD 120,000 plus 11.5% super. The post is eligible for salary sacrificing. The ICRC offers an additional monthly contribution to your selected private health insurance.

Applicants must have full legal working rights to work and in live in Australia and have had experience working on living in the Pacific Island region and New Zealand.
