The Independent Education Union (SA) Branch represents more than 3600 teachers and support staff in South Australia employed in Catholic schools, Independent schools, and other non-government education providers, of which over 70% are female.

The IEU(SA) is looking to employ an experienced Organiser based in our Adelaide CBD office, commencing on or around January 2025. This is a full-time, position - replacement for 2025 with the likelihood of it becoming ongoing from 2026. Consideration will be made for part time or job share arrangements.

About the Organiser role

As part of our Organising team, you will work with a small group of Organisers and other staff. A large part of the role will be identifying, developing, educating and supporting workplace delegates and activists to build union structures in the workplace. The organiser will identify organising opportunities and support members to work collectively to achieve positive resolutions to workplace issues. As part of the organiser role, you will be engaging and recruiting potential members. As an organiser you would be expected to provide information and advice regarding industrial entitlements and workplace matters in the first instance. You would also be assisting in the development and negotiation of Enterprise Agreements.

Demonstrated Experience in:

  • Organising and leading campaigning and growing strength within workplaces
  • Identifying and strategically planning organising activities in workplaces
  • Building workplace representatives and organising structures
  • Motivating, coaching and developing the skills of members and workplace leaders to campaign, negotiate and act collectively on workplace issues
  • Responding in a timely way to members
  • Assisting with the negotiation of Enterprise Agreements
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively to achieve outcomes
  • High level of organisation skills, particularly focussed on planning, recording and prioritising your work and managing competing priorities.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail
  • High degree of computer literacy (Word, Excel, iMIS, SMS communication)
  • Knowledge of the Australian industrial relations system and ability to utilise industrial instruments to provide relevant information and advice to members

Conditions:

  • Annual salary of $118,472 plus 16.5% Super and leave loading
  • Excellent working conditions in accordance with the IEU(SA) Branch Enterprise Agreement 2017
  • 5 weeks of Annual leave, plus paid Christmas closedown
  • Health and Fitness allowance, EAP
  • Inner city location with provision of undercover car park provided
  • Reimbursement for use of personal car
  • Organisers generally work from 9am-5pm, but there is some flexibility in working hours. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required. Intrastate overnight travel will also be necessary.
  • An ability to work in Australia, a valid driver’s licence, successful approval for a Federal Right of Entry permit and a state WHS Entry permit are ongoing requirements for this position.
