ABOUT THE IEUA WA BRANCH

The Independent Education Union of Australia WA Branch (IEUA WA Branch) represents the interests of employees in all non-government education & training throughout WA, such as Catholic, Anglican and Independent Schools, English Language Colleges, and Registered Training Organisations.

With almost 5000 members in 400 educational sites across Western Australia, the IEUA WA Branch provides industrial assistance, access to in-house and external professional learning resources and a strong voice within the sector.

About you

  • Strong, focused and motivated with a commitment to trade union values and social justice.
  • You will be an experienced Industrial Officer/Employment Lawyer with previous experience working with a union.
  • You must be an excellent communicator, able to successfully communicate with a diverse group of members.
  • Be a team player and committed to improving the lives of IEU members.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Industrial Relations, Employee Relations, Law, or a related discipline, with relevant experience would be highly regarded.

Selection Criteria

  • Previous experience working with a union as an Industrial Officer
  • A demonstrated commitment to trade union values and social justice.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Previous experience and high-level understanding of Industrial Relations processes before the Commission or other courts/tribunals
  • High level of skill in the preparation and presentation of cases before the Fair Work Commission, the Industrial Magistrates Court, and other Tribunals.
  • Planning and organisational skills (experience establishing priorities, allocating resources and meeting deadlines)
  • Ability to exercise accurate and high-level judgment about industrial issues, including those with union-wide sensitivity or implications.
  • Well-developed research and critical thinking skills.
  • Specific knowledge and preferably experience in the negotiation of collective agreements.
  • Be able to work semi-autonomously and willing to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • To perform this job, you will also be required to have or obtain and maintain a valid driver’s licence, and Right of Entry Permits

Desirable

  • Tertiary qualifications in Industrial Relations, Employee Relations, Law, or a related discipline, with relevant union experience would be highly regarded.
  • Specific knowledge of or experience with the education sector would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply awards and enterprise agreements and provide verbal and written advice to members, delegates, and organisers.
  • Represent individual members in disciplinary/grievances and workplace disputes.
  • Prepare and advocate before the Fair Work Commission, Industrial Magistrates Court, Teachers Registration Board, State Administrative Tribunal, and other jurisdictions, as necessary.
  • Participate in enterprise bargaining negotiations and ensure compliance with the legislative regime in all aspects of the bargaining process.
  • Respond to members inquiries with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Commitment to, and willingness to participate in, the Union’s social justice agenda and promoting the values and vision of the IEU and fostering a culture of solidarity, diversity, and inclusion among members.

  • 17.5% leave loading paid on 4 weeks ARL in December each year.
