THE JOB
Are you an experienced union organiser who is highly motivated, has a strong work ethic, loves a challenge, and wants to make a difference? Do you have a passion for empowering non-government education and training workers?
If yes, then we have the perfect job for you!
Join us at the Independent Education Union of Australia WA Branch (IEUA WA Branch) as a permanent full-time or part-time organiser and work with our fantastic team of passionate professionals. You will be part of a union representing employees’ interests in Catholic, Anglican and Independent Schools, English Language Colleges, and Registered Training Organisations across Western Australia.
You will be dedicated to developing a strong and powerful voice for IEU members by empowering them with the necessary skills and support.
Recruiting new members and delegates will be key to your role.
ABOUT THE IEUA WA BRANCH
The Independent Education Union of Australia WA Branch (IEUA WA Branch) represents the interests of employees in all non-government education & training throughout WA, such as Catholic, Anglican and Independent Schools, English Language Colleges, and Registered Training Organisations.
With almost 5000 members in 400 educational sites across Western Australia, the IEUA WA Branch provides industrial assistance, access to in-house and external professional learning resources and a strong voice within the sector.
The IEUA WA Branch is committed to advancing the collective interests of our members in the workplace and growing membership across these sectors to create a place of safety, well-being, and financial security at work for all workers.
AS AN ORGANISER, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
- Building sustainable union structures in the workplace by engaging with members, recruiting new members and delegates, and identifying potential activists and leaders.
- Providing ongoing support and development to delegates, activists, and members and empowering them with the skills and resources they need to have a strong and powerful voice in their workplace.
- Identifying member and workplace issues and implementing strategies to address them through collective action and advocacy.
- Provide basic industrial advice to members in person and over the phone.
- Negotiating collective agreements
- Representing members in workplace grievances and disciplinary issues.
- Maintaining accurate records of membership, contacts, activities, and outcomes using the union's database and reporting systems and providing regular feedback and reports to the union leadership.
- Communicating effectively with members and potential members through various channels such as phone calls, emails, newsletters, social media, and face-to-face visits, informing them of the benefits of union membership, the services and support available, and the issues and campaigns that matter to them.
- Promoting the values and vision of the IEU WA Branch and fostering a culture of solidarity, diversity, and inclusion among members.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A demonstrated commitment to trade unions, social justice and the passion and drive to improve workers’ lives in line with the goals of the IEU.
- A minimum of three years’ union organising experience or in a community organising role
- Highly skilled in recruitment and organising..
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to plan, prioritise, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Experience developing, educating, and motivating members, activists, and delegates.
- Commitment to, and willingness to participate in, the Union’s social justice agenda.
- Willingness to undertake IEU travel to country and regional workplaces as required.
Desirable:
While not essential, previous experience in the education sector would be advantageous.
REMUNERATION
An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which will include:
- Salary commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience.
- A motor vehicle is provided.
- 14.5% superannuation
- six weeks annual leave plus 17.5% leave loading (on four weeks paid in December each year)
