Impact of the organisation and the impact you will have in this role

The Head of Philanthropy will have the opportunity to lead the philanthropy program and secure and grow high-value support from individuals and foundations. This position plays a critical role in driving strategic growth by cultivating strong relationships with individual donors and maximising their philanthropic contributions to impact life changing health programs.

We are searching for a strategic, hands on, and collaborative fundraiser who understands that the value of teamwork is vital to the success of a fundraising program. Supported by an inspiring and experienced leader, the Head of Philanthropy will work closely with the Head of Principal Gifts, who will share a peer role. This collaborative partnership will ensure a cohesive approach to donor engagement and will be critical to the success of the philanthropy program and national large-scale research and healthcare initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation and success of the philanthropy strategy by applying a strong understanding of prospect identification, stewardship plans, continuous donor growth and engagement, and data-driven processes to meet goals
  • Grow the average gift and donor portfolio by identifying, cultivating and stewarding relationships with major donors and philanthropic foundations to secure sustainable and substantial support for programs and initiatives
  • Lead the grant-making process, which includes prospect research, proposal writing, grant reporting, and compliance to ensure alignment with donor priorities
  • Implement moves management plans, while communicating updates with all relevant stakeholders that include the philanthropy team, leadership team and the CEO
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Principal Gifts, and coordinate efforts and ensure alignment between philanthropic strategies, leveraging each other's strengths and resources to maximise outcomes and ensure a positive experience for each donor throughout their philanthropic journey
  • Continuously lead, engage and inspire the Philanthropy Executive on the journey to meet fundraising goals
  • Build impactful working relationships across the organisation to unlock large-scale opportunities for philanthropic support
  • Provide accurate budget reporting and forecasting, working within allocated expenditure
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, ethical standards, and best practices in philanthropy, maintaining the highest level of integrity and transparency in all fundraising activities

Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a major gift strategy, with proven success securing philanthropic support from major givers
  • Strong knowledge and experience cultivating donor engagement plans, stewardship plans, and processes along with the understanding of moves management of donors – from lead generation through to gift conversion
  • Confidence in “making the ask” with the ability to secure and grow transformational and multi-year gifts that align with each donor's individual motivation to give
  • Demonstrated data analysis skills with the ability to research, profile, and qualify major gifts prospects, and to develop and implement moves management plans
  • A collaborative approach, and proven success working with others internally to unlock large-scale fundraising opportunities
  • Ability to manage, coach and develop a small team
  • Excellent high-level communication and influencing skills with experience collaborating with others to gain tailored support
  • A strategic mindset, with the ability to influence growth and drive for results
  • A genuine interest in making a transformational impact on the health of all Australians
