Impact of the organisation

Australia for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner in Australia, raising awareness and funds to support UNHCR’s global emergency response to humanitarian crises.

Established in 2000, A4U has raised $480m from individual donors, philanthropists and corporates, leading to direct impact on the ground delivering emergency support such as shelter, protection, clean water, food and medicines.

Impact you will make in this role

The Philanthropy Manager collaborates across the Philanthropy & Partnerships team to develop and execute strategies aimed at identifying, nurturing, and securing major donations from $10,000 upwards.

In this important role, the manager works alongside fellow Philanthropy / Mid Value Managers and the Prospect Researcher to build relationships with current donors and seek out new prospects. A critical aspect of the position is discovering new opportunities and helping shape and advance the program's growth strategy.

The role manages one team member who has oversight of Faith Based Philanthropy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute strategies for growth across the major donor program, managing retention metrics and identifying new opportunities
  • Develop initiatives to identify, cultivate and solicit gifts from major donors of $10,000 and above
  • Work with the mid value team to develop an upgrade strategy for middle to major donors
  • Oversee a portfolio of existing donors, fostering strong relationships to ensure continued support for Australia for UNHCR
  • Build and maintain connections with individual donors and foundations, crafting tailored solicitation approaches that align with both Australia for UNHCR’s goals and donor interests
  • Actively collaborate with the broader team to meet major donor fundraising targets by increasing repeat gifts and enhancing donor lifetime value
  • Offer strategic guidance and assist with donor communications to strengthen engagement
  • Create written proposals, reports, and supporting materials for major donors
  • Work together with local and international colleagues on collaborative projects and initiatives where appropriate
  • Manage the coordination and development of Faith Based Philanthropy initiatives to identify, cultivate and solicit gifts from donors as part of Zakat and Sadaqah donations
  • Collaborate with the events team to plan and coordinate thematic events for major donors, including Islamic philanthropy events like iftar
  • Manage the stewardship of key Islamic Philanthropy: donors, partners and ambassadors
  • Analyse philanthropic sector trends and advise on opportunities to enhance income for the portfolio, based on market insights and donor feedback
  • Manage and develop staff, ensuring they consistently deliver high-quality outcomes while aligning with organisational objectives, performance goals, and KPIs
  • Foster collaborative and productive working relationships by promoting open communication, inclusive planning, and continuous information sharing

Skills and Experience

  • A background in major gift fundraising with the ability to build prospective donor relationships, steward existing donors and make the ask
  • The ability to solicit substantial gifts
  • Proven ability to influence and engage a broad spectrum of supporters while fostering strong relationships
  • Experience in managing and tracking a high volume of potential donors and prospects
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating long-term relationships and driving growth aligned with targets
  • Proficiency in maintaining and analysing donor databases
  • Familiarity with impact assessment, evaluation, and learning frameworks within the philanthropic space
  • Proven experience in crafting comprehensive and compelling funding proposals and identifying key impact areas
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Effective time management abilities, results-oriented with a creative flair and a highly motivated approach to work
  • A passion to advocate and fundraise for refugee protection, emergency aid, and long-term support and solutions
