Impact of the opportunity

The Marketing & Fundraising Division have a bold and inspirational five-year growth strategy, and a central element of this strategy is an ambitious initiative to develop a top-tier philanthropy program. This involves leveraging their extensive database, collaborating with philanthropic partners, and establishing key external partnerships to revolutionise the Philanthropy Unit.

The Manager of the Philanthropy Unit will spearhead this initiative, which encompasses Major Gifts, Trusts and Foundations, Beneficiary Partnerships, and Key Events. With support from the Director of Marketing & Fundraising, this role will be responsible for engaging the Board and Executive team, managing all internal stakeholders, and coordinating with external agencies to ensure the program's success.

You will be a senior leader with a background in delivering growth across philanthropy programs, the ability to personally solicit high value gifts and you will have a proactive and strategic approach to managing stakeholder relationships in a large organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of the philanthropy growth strategy to deliver and exceed the expected goals and KPIs including agreed budgets
  • Lead on the development and implementation of fundraising strategies within the Philanthropy Unit; major gifts, partnerships, trusts and foundations and key events
  • Directly solicit high level gifts for Cancer Council NSW and manage relationships with associated major donors
  • Work with the Director Marketing and Fundraising, CEO, Board of Directors and Marketing and Fundraising Sub Committee to optimise their role in identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors
  • Engage with key stakeholders across the portfolio including philanthropists, corporate partners, grant bodies and beneficiary partnerships
  • Develop and lead a high performing team, underpinned by an ongoing focus on performance and professional development
  • Manage all associated budgets with responsibility for reporting of the performance across the Unit

Skills and Experience

  • Outstanding senior leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to think and act strategically
  • Demonstrated success in business planning, strategy development and execution within a major gifts setting
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering a successful philanthropy strategy
  • A proven fundraiser with an authentic and dynamic approach and personal experience soliciting large gifts within complex fundraising portfolios
  • Proven ability to effectively lead, empower and manage, mentor, and develop a growing philanthropy team to achieve results
  • Strength in leadership and a background in driving high performance
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to work with boards, fundraising committees, broader senior stakeholders and executive leadership teams
  • Demonstrated ability to develop budgets and strong financial management skills
  • Excellent team player, with a collaborative and supportive approach
