Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate, experienced, and empathetic Social Worker of Indian origin to join our dynamic team in a leadership capacity. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Indian male community in the Western region of Melbourne. This position is crucial to identify gaps and challenges faced by the new migrant families settling in Victoria. The Community Development officer will organise and facilitate regular community get togethers and build a social and networking group for Indian men, alongside raising awareness on support and services available to the community.
Responsibilities and accountabilities
- Establish an active group for Indian men in Wyndham to address migration stress and isolation.
- Engage men to ensure their participation in the group continues and increases.
- Engage with men to assess their needs and organise professional development training in line with their needs.
- Develop resources and other relevant material to build awareness among the group members
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with external agencies and strategic partners
- Work effectively and collaboratively within the broader IndianCare Team
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary agencies to ensure the group receives comprehensive services and support.
- Develop and implement strategies to promote community wellness, social justice, and inclusivity.
Selection Criteria
Qualifications and skills:
- Tertiary qualifications in social science, gender studies, community development or another area of relevance. (Master's in Community Development or Social Work preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in social work or community development.
- Strong understanding of community development and social work theories and frameworks, including trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
- Commitment to social justice, ethical practice, and advocacy for diverse communities.
- Ability to form strong collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including community and government agencies
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplined team
- Value time and have good time management skills
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience working in mental health, community services, or Men’s Behaviour Change program.
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Previous experience engaging with men in group setting
Written and verbal communication:
- Proven ability to produce high quality written communication that is suited to the audience and provides clear messages.
- Proven ability to develop and deliver presentations and workshops.
Preferred:
- Can speak any of these languages - Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu or Gujarati.
- Knowledge of social media and its usage to promote campaigns
- Good IT skills
- Driver’s Licence and a personal car
