Board Member (Voluntary) - Flexible Location

indigo foundation

This is a great chance to join a highly engaged, skilled and supportive Board.

We are looking for candidates who have a strong commitment to community-led development and gender justice, and expertise that will help indigo broaden its supporter networks and grow our income.

We believe that diversity will make us a stronger organisation and we particularly encourage candidates with lived experience in the global south or lived experience as a member of a diaspora community within Australia to apply.

About indigo foundation

indigo foundation is an innovative international community development organisation based in Australia. For over 20 years, we have supported grassroots organisations to pursue their development goals. We currently support with 7 local partners across 6 countries - Afghanistan, India, Rwanda, Indonesia, Bougainville, and Timor Leste. We are a proudly nimble and creative organisation, with committed volunteers and supporters across Australia.

We support our community partners to empower women and girls, improve education and health outcomes, secure better livelihoods for families and defend human rights in their communities. We believe powerful and positive change is achieved through community control over decision-making, honest communication between communities and ourselves and building strong community organisations.

The evidence over more than two decades tells us that community-led development works to transform lives and build more resilient communities. Our approach to partnership is built on respect, mutual learning and accepting that progress and setbacks are a normal part of community development.

About the role

We are looking for people who can demonstrate an understanding of indigo’s guiding principles - community ownership, equity, transparency, and sustainability – and are motivated by our international community development approach.

In addition, we are looking for someone who can bring knowledge and expertise in fundraising, income generation and donor relationships including experience with some or all the following:

  • growing a supporter and donor base in Australia
  • building relationships with the business sector in support of community development
  • grants from philanthropic trusts and foundations
  • funding from government agencies and international donors.

Board experience is welcome but not essential.

Over and above their governance role, Board members generally carry responsibility for other activities that fit their skills and the organisation's needs.

The board comprises nine people from varied professional backgrounds. It meets four times a year on Sundays, with at least one face to face meeting annually. Board members may be invited to participate in working groups in their area of expertise or interest. The role can be based anywhere in Australia.

indigo foundation is committed to being an inclusive organisation and has been working to ensure diversity in the profile of our board and volunteers. We do not discriminate on the basis of ability, age, gender identity and expression, national origin, race and ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or criminal record.
