About the Islamophobia Register Australia

The Islamophobia Register Australia was founded in late 2014 to provide a unique platform for incidents of Islamophobia to be reported, recorded and analysed. Operating for over 9 years, the Register has been collecting hate incident data by working in partnership with Charles Sturt University. During these years, the Register has published 4 national reports with a highly developed methodology for analysing patterns and trends in both online and offline hate. These reports have informed the media and the general public both in Australia and abroad about Islamophobia. The Register is now the leading organisation tracking and tackling hate in Australia, and has expanded its activities to include the provision of victim support services, education and training and policy and law reform. The Register does the following:

The Register directly or through established partnerships:

  • Delivers victim support services
  • Works to improve the justice experience of victims who are navigating police and the legal system
  • Work to improve the healing experience of victims who are navigating mental health services and other support services
  • Collect data on hate incidents, crime, discrimination, whether online or in the physical world
  • Publish academic reports in partnership with universities
  • Develops and delivers educational material and programs
  • Engages in advocacy, policy and law reform work
  • Nurtures networks for knowledge-sharing, skill-building and education as well as empowering Muslims, allies concerned about racism, and the broader community
  • Provide a platform for Muslim women, who are overrepresented in report statistics, to be heard and hear one another
  • Foster meaningful national dialogue to prevent future harmful behaviours like hate incidents, hate crime, unlawful vilification or discrimination based on protected characteristics like race and religion

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Register’s victim support service
  • Provide support to reporters of Islamophobia that is safe, timely, culturally sensitive, efficient and client-centred.
  • Deliver case management and assist reporters through the reporting process and follow up-support options, keeping track of their progress.
  • Provide advocacy assistance in certain circumstances
  • Evaluate victim support service through multiple avenues and prepare reports outlining this.
  • Manage support service processes including document management and updating the Register’s CRM system
  • Develop and deliver outreach and awareness raising presentations and programs at various locations throughout the city on a weekly basis
  • Collect incident reports onsite at these outreach sessions and follow up with reporters
  • Nurture and grow strong, purposeful connections with community and stakeholder groups
  • Assist in developing of strategies to enhance the current services of the Register
  • Create new relationships as well as maintain and manage existing relationships with the Register’s organisational partners such as the Police, Anti-Discrimination Boards and mental health providers, ensuring effective and efficient delivery of the Register’s community services
  • Identify case studies for various purposes
  • Prepare relevant monthly reports for and meet with the Executive Director/Operations Manager

Selection criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (preferably in Social Work) or extensive community development experience
  • Ability to communicate with clients with empathy and understanding, in a culturally sensitive way
  • Ability to effectively engage with relevant stakeholders for Register clients and Register network
  • Sound understanding of the role of local community links in community development
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Effective organisational skills including time management, prioritising and ability to effectively complete allocated tasks
  • Ability to use computer-based software programs, including data collection
  • Lived experience of Islamophobia will be highly regarded
  • Have or have the ability to obtain a clear Employee Working With Children Check and National Police Check (paid for by the Register)
  • Valid and current Driver’s License is essential
  • Must be Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane based
  • Availability to participate in out of hours events such as delivering outreach sessions at Muslim community gatherings out of hours
  • Note that we are in the process of scoping out an office space and you may be required to work from the office 1 day per week depending on your location.
