  • Hours: The position is 0.8 FTE, however we would consider up to 1.0 FTE for the right candidate

ABOUT JUBILEE AUSTRALIA RESEARCH CENTRE

Jubilee Australia is a dynamic not-for-profit organisation based on Gadigal Country, Sydney/Eora with a vision for a fairer future, where empowered communities, just economies and a healthy planet go hand in hand.

We conduct research-based advocacy, in partnership with other organisations and communities across Australia and the Asia-Pacific, to defend the rights of people and the planet over profit, and hold corporations and governments accountable. 

Geographically, our work is focused on Australia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region.

WE WORK ON MANY ISSUES, INCLUDING:

  • Supporting communities in the Pacific to exercise their right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent for mining projects on their land;
  • Campaigning to prevent public finance from underwriting the fossil fuel industry;
  • Supporting the fight to stop Australia’s dirtiest offshore gas project: Santos’ Barossa Gas Project off the coast of the Northern Territory;
  • Collaborating with our PNG partners to save the Amazon of our region, The Sepik River, from a destructive copper and gold mine;
  • Working with partners in PNG and the Solomon Islands to support communities seeking to protect their rainforest areas from illegal or unsustainable logging;
  • Working with partners in Australia to ensure that mining for the energy transition happens in a way that minimise social and environmental harms;
  • Changing Australian government policies that undermine sustainable economies and livelihoods and economic justice for our neighbours in the Pacific and beyond.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

The role of Director, Climate Justice will be to oversee Jubilee Australia’s climate justice work, including on campaigns to stop the expansion of the fossil fuel industry and to end the industry’s reliance on public finance support.

Our staff work closely with First Nations and other Indigenous communities and partners across Australia and the Asia-Pacific, so lived experience in a cross-cultural context is a highly sought-after attribute for this position.

This role reports to the Executive Director, but will work closely with other members of the Jubilee team.

Knowledge of the sector is a plus, but applicants from outside the human rights/environmental/international development sectors are also encouraged to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Provide expertise and strategic leadership in the area of focus, leading project teams and managing work to ensure that Jubilee achieves its goals;
  • As part of the Jubilee leadership team, develop and maintain good relations with individuals and organisations who have been identified as Jubilee partners (locally, internationally and in the region) and support the advocacy efforts of regional partners where needed;
  • Oversee the research and writing of Jubilee's written materials in the area of focus, such as research reports, briefing papers, government submissions, and other advocacy materials;
  • Willingness to undertake some domestic and occasional overseas travel
  • Represent Jubilee and engage with key stakeholders in the media, in civil society, private sector and in government by developing relationships and networks to maximise the impact of our work;’;
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, prepare grant proposals for funders and manage grant reporting, including financial reporting within the area of focus;
  • Lead the production and design of campaign materials including reports, briefing papers, infographics, and campaign videos in the area of focus;
  • Contribute to communications strategy and implementation, including providing content for social media accounts, supporter emails and website, drafting and distributing media releases, participating in media interviews and contributing to maintaining media contacts;
  • Help manage Jubilee donations, its monthly donors, its supporter database; assist in the preparation of financial statements, the annual audit and the annual report;
  • Contribute as part of the leadership team to attract funding to support Jubilee, including identifying funding opportunities, developing funding proposals to grant-making bodies, and preparing reports on completed grants;
  • Manage staff, and assist in the supervision of any interns or other volunteers;
  • Any other management or administrative tasks as required by the ED.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Strong research and writing skills, and proven experience in overseeing the publication of reports;
  • Experience in campaigning at a non-government organisation in an area to do with human rights, the environment, energy or social justice;
  • Experience in lobbying and advocacy – such as with government officials, elected representatives , international bodies or the private sector;
  • Good interpersonal skills; demonstrated experiencing working as an effective member of a team;
  • Experience of working in support of community-led campaigns or other centering of those most impacted by climate injustice, or a strong desire to learn.

Desirable:

  • Lived experience of climate injustice;
  • Experience in collaborating closely with First Nations or Pasifika peoples and/or lived experience in First Nations, the Pacific or South-East Asia;
  • At least 5 years experience in a human rights, environmental, energy or development organisation;
  • Strong risk management or a capacity to learn. For example, experience; working on research or advocacy that may relate to corporate practices, marginalised communities or whistleblowers;
  • Experience in managing staff.
