We are looking for a Community Liaison and Education Officer (CLEO) to join our multidisciplinary team in Kununurra, WA. You will be passionate about community development and education, working to ensure our multi-practice services are strongly connected to the communities in which we operate, especially remote Aboriginal communities.

You will develop, coordinate and deliver Community Legal Education (CLE), Community Education (CE), and capacity-building services to local communities by enhancing awareness and understanding about the law, non-legal issues, how to identify, prevent and deal with problems, and awareness of the help available from support services – with a particular focus on FDV, homelessness and elder abuse.

A typical day might entail:

  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to arrange, promote and deliver activities, workshops, training and events in person and online to the community.
  • Engaging with the community, including schools, local papers and radio, through multiple communication mediums.
  • Updating and improving marketing collateral and resources, including posters, social media tiles, brochures, and advertisements.
  • Developing and executing the annual CLE and CE strategic plan.
  • Preparing reports and analytics about CLE/CE activities for our funders and board.
  • Developing, promoting and maintaining KCLS’s mission and impact through positive stakeholder relationships that creates CLE/CE opportunities.
  • Fully engaging with the wider KCLS team to collaborate and involve in community service delivery.

We are searching for someone who can meet most of the following:

  • Close working knowledge of Aboriginal culture and communities in the Kimberley, and proven experience in rapidly building trust within those communities.
  • Critical interpersonal and empathetic communication skills, including with clients and reflecting on our practice.
  • Sound organisational skills and ability to manage workload and competing demands, while meeting deadlines and working effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding and commitment to principles of social justice and to working effectively with Aboriginal people in remote areas.
  • Experience or aptitude in developing and delivering social change and/or education programs, ideally in an Aboriginal context.
  • Working knowledge of office systems, and ideally some experience with basic print, online design programs, and computer databases.
  • Personal resilience, adaptability and ability to meet the challenges of remote service delivery.
  • Successful applicants will need to provide references, a recent WA Police Clearance, current WA Working with Children’s Check, and confirm their working rights in Australia.

Further desirable criteria

  • Current driver’s license valid for use in WA.
  • Experience in a community legal setting and/or community-based organisation.
