Overview

Kensington Neighbourhood House (KNH) is a community-managed charity focused on advancing mental health outcomes and reducing social isolation. We provide opportunities for connection through a range of low-cost activities, social groups, volunteering roles and whole-of-family education and recreation programs. Art Programs

KNH has been offering art classes to the community for over 20 years. We offer both adult and children’s classes. “Creative Art For Kids” runs across 4 classes, two afternoons a week. Average attendance for these classes is between 8 and 10 children. The classes are divided by age – 5 to 8 year olds and 9 to 12 year olds. All materials and art supplies are provided by KNH.

General Staff Duties:

Help maintain a warm and caring environment which encourages participants to feel safe and welcome. This includes promoting principles of equity and respect between participants, volunteers, staff and the wider community.

Specific Staff Duties:

  • Prepare classroom for each session
  • Provide a structured and supportive environment for participants
  • Plan and deliver a series of weekly classes focusing on painting, drawing and other creative techniques. Sessions can be flexible and adjusted according to the needs and interests of the groups.
  • Provide instruction in the use of different media (graphite pencils, charcoal, oil, acrylic and watercolor paints etc)
  • Guide students to develop their own practice.
  • Monitor art supplies and order stock as needed via the KNH Manager
  • Maintain records of attendance
  • Liaise with parents of participants
  • Pack up and leave classroom clean and tidy

  • Program participants; and parents of program participants

Key Selection Criteria

  • Qualification in Fine Arts OR other relevant experience
  • Prior experience teaching or supervising children
  • Imagination, creativity and skills in a variety of art techniques.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to supervise group work.
  • Supportive, flexible disposition.
  • The successful completion of a Working with Children Check
  • Two successful referee checks
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children.

Hours and location of work

Tuesday and Wednesday

3.30pm -5.30pm during school terms

(5-8 year olds 3.30pm – 4.15pm; 9-12 year olds 4.30pm-5.30pm)

Wages and Conditions:

  • This is a permanent part-time position classified under the Neighbourhood Houses and Adult Community Education Centres Agreement, Schedule 2D Tutor 1. It is paid at an above award hourly rate of $45.00 per hour. Superannuation and leave provisions apply.
  • Work hours are 4 hours per week during school terms.
  • Staff are bound by the policies and procedures of the organisation as amended from time to time.
