Kensington Neighbourhood House (KNH) is a community-managed charity focused on advancing mental health outcomes and reducing social isolation.

We provide opportunities for connection through a range of low-cost activities, social groups, volunteering roles and whole-of-family education and recreation programs.

Our long term EAL teacher is retiring. This is a big change for our students and organisation and we are looking for a friendly, welcoming, and experienced EAL teacher to join our team.

The position involves teaching post beginner (Level 1) and intermediate (Level 2) pre-accredited English classes (ACFE funded). The focus of these classes is to develop the oral and written skills of learners, enhancing their employability skills and broadening their understanding of the Australian community. While language learning is important, we also want to build the confidence, connection and social inclusion of participants.

Class times are:

  • 9.30am-12.30pm Mondays – English and Work Skills (Level 2)
  • 9.30am-12.30pm Tuesdays – English and Work Skills (Level 2)
  • 9.30am-12.30pm Wednesdays – English and Work Skills (Level 1)
  • 9.30am-12.30pm Thursdays – English and Work Skills (Level 1)

Additionally, 2 hours of planning time are allowed for each week (14 hours per week, total).

The position reports to the Community Education Manager.

General Staff Duties:

  • Help maintain a warm and caring environment which encourages participants to feel safe and welcome. This includes promoting principles of equity and respect between participants, volunteers, staff and the wider community.

Specific Duties:

  • Deliver and document 2 x 10 week English courses each Term (Level 1 and Level 2). Class content can be customised to suit the needs of each group. Teacher’s preferred resources can be used or ACFE PQF+ course plans can be accessed.
  • Create a classroom culture of sharing, respect and inclusion. This is important. Our learner attendance and retention rates are high because learners feel valued and included at KNH.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance in the roll system provided.
  • Maintain open communication with students and staff.
  • Observe confidentiality and privacy requirements regarding student and staff information.
  • Comply with policies and procedures of KNH and all relevant government legislation and/or regulations as required.
  • Participate in program review meetings.
  • Encourage responsible use of classroom resources and equipment and observe venue security procedures.

Key Selection Criteria:

TESOL qualification AND/OR Teaching qualifications AND/OR significant demonstrated experience teaching English to adult learners

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Experience in adapting course content to suit a broad range of learners

Award Classification:

This is a 14 hour per week permanent part-time position classified at Level 2.6 under Schedule 3D of the Neighbourhood Houses & Adult Community Education Centres Collective Agreement. An above award wage of $40 per hour is paid. Superannuation and leave provisions apply.
